poH ngaj ret, souvlakia vIje'meH jIve'taH ('elaDya'ngan jIHmo', pIj souvlakia vISop); 'ej jIve'taHvIS.. I made an important realization. I knew that if we want to add two adverbs to a noun we had the following ways: ngIngbogh HoS nIt nItbogh HoS ngIng ngIngbogh 'et nItbogh HoS nItbogh 'ej ngIngbogh HoS ngIngbogh HoS 'ej nItbogh nItbogh HoS 'ej ngIngbogh All good.. but what if these methods failed to convey the feeling I was aiming for ? lets assume I want to say: "pure negative energy I summon thee" no method of the above is able to convey the exceptional dark "punch" of the english original. none. 'ej souvlakiawIj vISamtaHvIS, luckily I realized that the solution was easy: {HoS nIt, HoS ngIng qarIt}. Perhaps it is just a matter of personal preference, but I feel that the last method better conveys the feeling of the moment, let alone that it is more direct than "energy which is this and that go figure". Of course the question arises: In the {HoS nIt, HoS ngIng qarIt} is it legal to use the {qa-} ? ok, here you got me.. I don't know for sure, but if: a. each of the {HoS nIt} {HoS ngIng} are to be considered to be forms of address, and b. they address the same thing (which is "one") then why not use the {qa-} ? maj ! What am I ? The village idiot ? I just realized that for months now, I've been using the {toH} as the {vaj}. aaargh ! {toH} = so, well (exclamation) {vaj} = so, then, thus, in that case (adv) I can't say: {toH, pa'vo' mej} but I can say: {vaj, pa'vo' mej} If I say {toH, pa'vo' mej} then this doesn't mean "so, he left the room"; it means "so ! he left the room". However the {vaj, pa'vo' mej} does indeed mean "so, he left the room". Why ? Why is it only now that I realize this ? qunnoH jan puqloD

At another thread I wrote: {toH, juHwIjDaq vIjaHmeH yaHwIj HurDaq vIjaH net poQ} Would it be acceptable if I wrote: {toH, juHwIjDaq vIjaHmeH HurDaq vIjaH net poQ} So, the question is: Can words as {Hur}, {bIng}, {Dung} etc, be used on their own, or is it necessary for them to refer to another noun, a noun that will precede them ? qunnoH jan puqloD

Expressing must with imperatives

A while ago we talked about the nature of {-nIS} and how it differs from "must". And we discussed how we could work around this limitation through the use of {'ut} and {net poQ}. However something continued "not to feel right". A while ago I wrote: "when you're translating into klingon you must recreate the feeling of the original passage". If I wanted to write this using the above workarounds I should say {tlhIngan Hol DaghItlhmeH Hol nov DamughtaHvIS, Hol nov qa' Dachenqa'moH} and then add a {'ut}, or {net poQ}. But today I realized there is an additional way, which is perhaps even better.. What does the "must' express, if not an imperative of sorts ? When I say "you need to do this", often I mean "you must do this", and in other words I'm giving a command, only I choose to do it in a more kind manner. But since tlhIngan Hol, isn't the weak and indecisive DIvI' Hol, we could avoid altogether the {-nIS} and give the command. So, in above example, instead of the {tlhIngan Hol DaghItlhmeH Hol nov DamughtaHvIS, Hol nov qa' Dachenqa'moH, 'ut / net poQ} I could write: {tlhIngan Hol DaghItlhmeH Hol nov DamughtaHvIS, Hol nov qa' yIchenqa'moH}. and then, if it is necessary I could add a {'ut}, a {net poQ} or whatever else (although I think that they rarely would be). qunnoH jan puqloD
