The klingon word for "socks" is {paSlogh}. Is this word to be treated as being grammatically singular, and is it possible to say "one sock" in klingon ? As far as I know, it is unknown if a singular form exists. qunnoq

For the translation of the intro of a famous German children TV show I have asked Marc Okrand how I'd best name their main characters which are a mouse and an elephant. Okrand talked to Maltz and replied with the following. It's not really a new word, but at least some canon spelling of a terran animal. --------------------------------------- Lieven — I think {Qa'Hom} is okay for "mouse." And Maltz wasn't aware of any native Klingon elephant-like animal. So go with a Klingon version of Federation Standard. At this year's qepHom, we received lots of new words. Some of them were wishes by qepHom attendees and others. Others were used in Andrew Miller's Art presentation in a Museum of Pittsburgh, which happened on the same weekend. Marc Okrand gave me the list in english alphabetical order, so for reading convenience I re-arranged them in a somehow logical order. New Beginner's Grammarian?

Hi all -- it has been more than a year since I was named Beginner's Grammarian. I have barely done any of that job because there has been nearly no KLBC traffic. In any case I'd like to formally step down in case anyone else would like to take the position. However, it seems to me that there is so rarely traffic that comes under the BG's purview that the position might remain vacant without consequence. Are arabic numerals canon ?

It just came to me.. Are arabic numerals (i.e. 1,2,3..) canon ? Would klingons use them in their sentences ? Do they appear in sentences written by 'oqranD ? qunnoq

Is Star Trek: Discovery a new canon category?

We know that Okrand wasn't directly involved in Star Trek: Discovery, but that the production team went to great lengths and worked with Qov to make the dialogue properly Okrandian Klingon. We haven't seen the result, and maybe some things were edited in post-production and have to be retrofitted (like with the movies). My question is, would you consider the Klingon dialogue, etc., in Star Trek: Discovery to be Okrandian canon? These are the categories of Okrand-related canon that I can think of: 1. Things Okrand wrote or said himself (the books, tapes, interviews in HolQeD, reveals at the qep'a' and qepHom'a') 2. Things done by Klingonists in which Okrand had major involvement (paq'batlh... anything else in this category?) 3. Things done by Klingonists in which Okrand had some involvement (I'm not sure the extent of his involvement in Klingon Christmas Carol? Maybe that belongs in category #2?... TalkNow! Klingon, Festival of the Spoken Nerd) 4. Things done by non-Klingonists but licensed by Paramount/CBS (Keith R.A. DeCandido and a few other authors, the Haynes BoP book) 5. Things done by Klingonists with minimal involvement from Okrand but licensed by Paramount/CBS (Star Trek: Discovery) I guess maybe Star Trek: Discovery is similar to category #3, but it's still in its own category because it's on a STAR TREK TV SHOW, and thus (especially to the world outside of Klingonists) more "official". Are people going to accept sentences from Star Trek: Discovery as canonical Klingon? (For example, no objection if I use sentences from the show as examples in {boQwI'}?) -- De'vID

STID dialogue

Remember the Klingon dialogue between Uhura and the Klingon from Star Trek Into Darkness? Do you also remember that the final cut was pieced together and retranslated and re-subtitled? On YouTube you can still watch the original cut (with wrong subtitles though): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9AFnBkIRwo The Klingon Wiki has the dialogue and explanations about this scene: http://www.klingonwiki.net/En/ST12 A few of those lines were still unclear. For my Klingon course that I will teach in September and November this year (in Switzerland), I was preparing a discussion and translation task about these dialogues, and I think I understood one of the lines that have a (?) behind it. The Wiki has: {jIHvo' neH De' jIbup (?).} = "from me want data ..." This doesn't make much sense. I listened to the dialogue again and I think what's being said is: {jIHvo' nIHDI' jIbup.} = "When he stole from me, I quit." This makes a lot of sense in the whole dialogue. I think I will correct the dialogue in the Klingon Wiki. Any idea about the other sentence? {tlhInganna' naQpu'a' SoH?} = "You are a definite klingon. (?)" I do think the dialogue is in correct Klingon, but perhaps it's something quite different, though I don't get the verb in the middle, a suggestion: {tlhIngan Da-???-pu''a' SoH?} = "Did you [naq?] a Klingon / the Klingon(s)?" The syllable in the middle sounds like naq or naQ, but I can't figure it out. Also, is the second line plausible? {mughojmoH parmaqqaywI'.} = "My romantic partner has taught me." Maybe this is referring to the Klingons' surprise upon her speaking Klingon, but the sentence seems a bit out of context. Could the verb be something different here? Maybe the romantic partner has betrayed, wronged, abandoned, stolen from, ... her – but none of the verbs fit. Apologies if this has all long been figured out years ago after the movie; maybe the Klingon Wiki page isn't up-to-date. I'd like to present a complete dialogue to my (future) students. - André

With "joq" - how do we choose the right verb prefix ?

Hello all, While discussing on the "Learn Klingon" group on Facebook, we wondered how to choose the correct verb prefix when "joq" (and / or) is used in the object and / or subject of the sentence. If we have the structure: noun1 noun2 joq + verb Do we consider that the object of the verb is singular or plural ? Using an example sentence: We need to learn French and / or Klingon. 1/ vIraS Hol tlhIngan Hol joq *wI*ghojnIS. 2/ vIraS Hol tlhIngan Hol joq *DI*ghojnIS if it were just a "je" we'd use "DI-" without hesitating, or if it were a "ghap" we'd use "wI-", but with joq... ? Has it already been discussed at some point what to do when you can't determine whether a verb's object / subject is singular or plural ? Thanks in advance :) Aurélie
