The klingon word for "socks" is {paSlogh}. Is this word to be treated as being grammatically singular, and is it possible to say "one sock" in klingon ? As far as I know, it is unknown if a singular form exists. qunnoq

For the translation of the intro of a famous German children TV show I have asked Marc Okrand how I'd best name their main characters which are a mouse and an elephant. Okrand talked to Maltz and replied with the following. It's not really a new word, but at least some canon spelling of a terran animal. --------------------------------------- Lieven — I think {Qa'Hom} is okay for "mouse." And Maltz wasn't aware of any native Klingon elephant-like animal. So go with a Klingon version of Federation Standard. At this year's qepHom, we received lots of new words. Some of them were wishes by qepHom attendees and others. Others were used in Andrew Miller's Art presentation in a Museum of Pittsburgh, which happened on the same weekend. Marc Okrand gave me the list in english alphabetical order, so for reading convenience I re-arranged them in a somehow logical order. At the qepHom ask about the vonlu'

Another thing which perhaps needs clarification is the vonlu'. A little bird told me, that at the kgt it is written {bIvonlu'pu'} instead of {Davonlu'pu'}. So, this raises the question, whether the {-lu'} shoved up the {von} of {vonlu'} is the indefinite subject suffix which we all know and love, or whether it is just a {lu'} which happened to cross the street while this word was being created. So, could someone write {vonlu'lu'} for "someone has failed utterly " ? And if it is indeed the indefinite subject suffix {-lu'}, then for "someone again failed utterly", do we write {vonqa'lu'} or {vonlu'qa'} ? Because if we write {vonqa'lu'} how would someone be able to differentiate from the {vonqa'lu'} which would mean "someone trapped him/them again" ? I'm tired of having to "throw the cards" (greek expression meaning "trying to guess"), in order to clarify grammar which should have been already clarified at numerous qep'a'mey and qepHommey so far (as is the case with {ngIq}, the verb prefix after a {joq}, etc etc etc..). Meta: Discussions about new words found in Netflix' Klingon subtitles for Star Trek: Discovery

As Lieven has mentioned previously on this mailing list, the Klingon subtitles for Star Trek: Discovery include a few new words from Maltz. These will be revealed in full at the qepHom'a' in mid-November. Until then, the only way to learn these words is to watch the show and compare the subtitles to the dialogue. Sometimes the meanings are quite clear, and at other times they require some guesswork. I personally quite like this approach; I enjoy the "hunt", and it's actually how I first envisioned learning Klingon might work, until I learned it wasn't used consistently in the various series. That being said, it is a bit unfair to our American chuDpu', who don't have access to these subtitles. So, it seems reasonable that those of us who *can* access them should use this mailing list to share our findings (with disclaimers that they include speculation). So, the question then is, how shall we go about it? Since there seems to be a consensus that we should wait for 48 ours after the US release before sharing plot details, should we have a similar guideline for words found in the subtitles? Or should we perhaps aim to share the relevant subtitles and corresponding English sentences as quickly as possible (with spoiler warnings for the relevant episode), so that everybody can join in the analysis/speculation as early on as possible? //loghaD

New Beginner's Grammarian?

Hi all -- it has been more than a year since I was named Beginner's Grammarian. I have barely done any of that job because there has been nearly no KLBC traffic. In any case I'd like to formally step down in case anyone else would like to take the position. However, it seems to me that there is so rarely traffic that comes under the BG's purview that the position might remain vacant without consequence. Translation help

Recently, I decided to start learning Klingon. As a practice, I started to translate the first few sentences of Sun Tzu’s the art of war. Although it looks right to me, I realize that, if I am in some way horribly mistaken as to how this language works, I would have no way of realizing this on my own. So, I am sending this to the mailing list, in the hopes that some good Samaritan could give me a pointer or two in my path to learning this fascinating language.
