Read this: "There are specific locations in the sea where sea monsters were thought to frequently appear". Could we use the {Daq}/{Sep} or maybe even {SepHom} for the word "locations" of the above example? In TKD we read: *Du'IHchoHmoH mIvvam*. Is it not possible just to say: *Du'IHmoH mIvvam*? When should we use *-choHmoH* and when only *-moH*? Thank you, as always, for your help!

from Maltz: the vanishing Cheshire Cat

In "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", there is the Cheshire Cat which keeps appearing and disappearing all the time. Sometimes it's halfway visible, sometimes it's all gone. While finding the right words to express this, Maltz revealed some interesting information on existing words. <<<<<<<< [talking about the vanishing cat:] That would probably be {DemchoH}, assuming the process is gradual (as opposed to instant). Note: "gradual" here does not necessarily imply "slow." {loj} is used for something that incrementally or gradually (again, not necessarily slowly) goes away. An example might be food on your plate or dirt that you wash off of something. If the room the person walks into is filled with, say, boxes that are to be taken somewhere and then, over a short or long time, the boxes are removed, once the room has no boxes, you could use {loj}. If the person walked into the room and it was full of furniture, then the person left the room and came back later only to find the room empty (and there was no reason to expect this to happen), you might use {ngab}. For beaming away, {DemchoH} might make sense for describing what people in the room who are watching someone beam away are seeing. That is, it’s a way of describing what beaming looks like to those not beaming. But, of course, when beaming happens, the person who beams away doesn’t stay there and become invisible. They’re gone! Once the person is gone, you might use {ngab}. {loj} would be appropriate if you’re focusing on the incremental disappearance of the person. To express "gone" in the sense of "no longer here" and the like, make use of {mej} or {mejmoH}. (This won’t work for the person coming into a now-empty room unless what was in the room before and is no longer there is animate. In the paq'batlh we have: {wa'DIch Hegh moratlh} for "first, morath fell". Suppose now we want to say "we didn't attack them first", meaning "we were not the ones who attacked first". Voragh: > Sounds fine to me, but keep in mind that phrases like {'eSpanya'ngan(pu') Huch} also mean "the Spaniard's (or Spaniards') money" -- ie. a specific one or group. As usual, context is everything. Yes, I know, thank you for your help! Me: > since speaking about *origin* is something we can usually do referring to the place or to the people who live in this place (of course, there were Spaniards who didn't live in Spain and used other currencies, but in a normal conversation and given the correct context, such an identification shouldn't be problematic, and I hope that's so for Klingons too). Just for the completeness of the idea: *Origin* can mean place, person or source from which something comes. Sometimes the persons from whom something comes or originates are the people living in a place (considered as a whole or society), so saying that something has its origin in the inhabitants of a place is more or less the same as saying that it has its origin in that place (like, I think, when we speak about currency or cuisine or art or history). However, I guess that if I want to speak in Klingon about the *Spanish vegetation*, i.e., if I want to indicate the origin of that vegetation, only naming the place from which it comes, *'eSpanya' tI* (*the vegetation of Spain*), would make sense. Saying something like *'eSpanya'ngan tI* (*the vegetation of the Spaniards*) would sound strange to me, since the inhabitants are not the origin or the creators of the country's vegetation (nor are they otherwise its possessors).
