Maltz about terraforming

This didn't comne through the first time, so here we go again. Don't know what happened. Maltz has revealed some words which I don't want to keep secret from you any longer. I'm sending them in individual messages to keep the subject line separated. ---begin quote------------ The Klingon verb {ghe'} is the one most likely to be involved here. It means "be transformed, transmuted, metamorphosed, totally altered." In context, if someone said {maS Daghe'moH'a'?} (literally "Are you transforming a moon?"), this would be understood to mean "Are you terraforming a moon?" If context isn't clear, then there'd have to be more verbiage: {tera' chu' DachenmoHmeH, maS Daghe'moH'a'?} "In order to create a new Earth, are you transforming a moon?") or {maSDaq yInmeH Humanpu', 'oH Daghe'moH'a'?} "In order that Humans live [be alive] on the moon, are you transforming it?" or {yInvaD maS Daghe'moH'a'?} "Are you transforming a moon to benefit life?" (clunky translation). I assume that the word "field" in "terraforming field" refers to a energy field of some sort that causing the terraforming to happen (and not to a plot of land that's undergoing terraforming). If so, the shortcut way to refer to that field would be {ghe'chem}; a longer way would be {ghe'moHbogh HoSchem}. But, as above, if context is lacking, there'd have to be some additional stuff to make the nature of the transformation clear. ---end quote------------ -- Lieven L. I flipped the direction of the curve of the lower part of {r} and extended it outwards to hopefully let it look more familiar. As for {tlh}, yes, I was going for a reuse of the top part of {ch}, and just changed the curve of the right side. I’ve redrawn it to still use the “hook” from {ch} but with a larger and more pointed to the right bowl. Here’s a screenshot with the current letter shapes; I’ll wait another couple of days for additional feedback, and hopefully have a font to share with everyone within the next couple of weeks. Maltz about fear

For the little verse I posted before this message, I asked Marc Okrand if there is a noun for "fear". As expected, he definitely confirmed there is not, because Maltz is a tough guy who does not know fear. Of course he is. :-) He also provided some nice way to translate the phrases. These are always nice to have as additional canon examples. ----begin quote-------------------------------------- Maltz says he knows no word for "fear." Maltz is one tough dude. He thinks using {ghIj} can work, however. Simple pIqaD typeface

Hello all,               danIlmoH ‘oH pongwIj’e’. tera’ngan jIh. mungwIj ‘oH ‘amerI’qa’ SepjIjQa’’e'. TexasDaq juHwIj ‘ach NewYorkDaq jIboghpu'. (Hope that was vaguely grammatical - that’s about as far as I’ll attempt conversing in Klingon for now.) I attempted to post this yesterday, but the message included an image attachment which was apparently too large, so here goes again with a smaller version of the image. I'm attempting to learn Klingon again, which I've done on several short-lived occasions since the mid '90s, and this time I'm trying to make a more solid effort. While studying the pIqaD I went through the exercise of designing a pIqaD typeface to help me learn the forms. I've styled it as a simple, "sans-serif" design which I call "pIqaD nap" (I hope that makes sense in tlhIngan Hol), and was curious to get some feedback from experienced pIqaD readers to see how "intuitively" legible it is. Here's a small sample: I know designs like this have been done before (see e.g. Nokia Pure Klingon), but I just couldn't get myself to agree with some of the choices made in any of the existing fonts that have been done in this vein. (For example, 'b', 'Q', 'r', and 'S' in the Nokia font seem a bit off to me when compared with the standard glyph shapes.) I'd appreciate any feedback on tweaks that experienced Klingonists may have on how to make these more recognizable as pIqaD while maintaining the overall design aesthetic. I plan on releasing the font under the SIL Open Font License after I've had a chance to tweak the kerning tables some more.
