The {ram} "night", used in the following way is a timestamp: {ram, leghchuq maH vIghro' je} at night, we and the cat will see each other Is the {qaStaHvIS ram} a timestamp too ? And the reason I am asking, is with regards to its placement in a sentence, which also happens to have a noun with a type-5 suffix. For example: {juHDaq, qaStaHvIS ram, maHaD maH vIghro' je} at home, during the night, we and the cat will be studying {qaStaHvIS ram, juHDaq, maHaD maH vIghro' je} during the night, at home, we and the cat will be studying The way I understand it, there is no rule as to what needs to come first; a timestamp, or a noun with a type-5 suffix. So, if the {qaStaHvIS ram} is a timestamp, then both of the above sentences must be correct. But the question is, whether the {qaStaHvIS ram} is indeed a timestamp, because if it isn't, then it necessarily needs to follow the {juHDaq}. qunnoq

The grammatical number of NOUN + 'ar

In TKD §6.4, this is written of the word 'ar: ------------ Finally, 'ar how many? how much? follows the noun to which it refers. It can never follow a noun with a plural suffix (-pu', -mey, -Du'; see section 3.3.2). ------------ I've always taken this to mean that a noun followed by 'ar is grammatically singular, and so we must say, for example, qachvam Dab nuv 'ar?, rather than *qachvam luDab nuv 'ar?*. However, it now strikes me that there is another possible interpretation, namely that while the noun followed by 'ar is never marked with a plural suffix, it could still be considered grammatically plural, and thus allow for sentences such as *qachvam luDab nuv 'ar?*. Unfortunately, the canonical example sentences we have using 'ar don't really shine much of a light on this. The only example I've found that uses a number-specific verb prefix to go with the NOUN + 'ar construct is nIn 'ar wIghaj. ("How much fuel do we have?") However, this example is of limited use, as the quantity of nIn ("fuel") is a presumably continuous, rather than discrete; while we would normally treat nIn law' and nIn puS as singular, we would treat nuv law' and nuv puS as plural. Can anybody think of any examples that could help to resolve this matter? Or is there an unofficial but commonly accepted answer?

STID dialogue

Remember the Klingon dialogue between Uhura and the Klingon from Star Trek Into Darkness? Do you also remember that the final cut was pieced together and retranslated and re-subtitled? On YouTube you can still watch the original cut (with wrong subtitles though): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9AFnBkIRwo The Klingon Wiki has the dialogue and explanations about this scene: http://www.klingonwiki.net/En/ST12 A few of those lines were still unclear. For my Klingon course that I will teach in September and November this year (in Switzerland), I was preparing a discussion and translation task about these dialogues, and I think I understood one of the lines that have a (?) behind it. The Wiki has: {jIHvo' neH De' jIbup (?).} = "from me want data ..." This doesn't make much sense. I listened to the dialogue again and I think what's being said is: {jIHvo' nIHDI' jIbup.} = "When he stole from me, I quit." This makes a lot of sense in the whole dialogue. I think I will correct the dialogue in the Klingon Wiki. Any idea about the other sentence? {tlhInganna' naQpu'a' SoH?} = "You are a definite klingon. (?)" I do think the dialogue is in correct Klingon, but perhaps it's something quite different, though I don't get the verb in the middle, a suggestion: {tlhIngan Da-???-pu''a' SoH?} = "Did you [naq?] a Klingon / the Klingon(s)?" The syllable in the middle sounds like naq or naQ, but I can't figure it out. Also, is the second line plausible? {mughojmoH parmaqqaywI'.} = "My romantic partner has taught me." Maybe this is referring to the Klingons' surprise upon her speaking Klingon, but the sentence seems a bit out of context. Could the verb be something different here? Maybe the romantic partner has betrayed, wronged, abandoned, stolen from, ... her – but none of the verbs fit. Apologies if this has all long been figured out years ago after the movie; maybe the Klingon Wiki page isn't up-to-date. I'd like to present a complete dialogue to my (future) students. - André

This is a sentence I came up with: vengDaq, vengmeyDaq je qaSchoHtaH Daw'mey. This is the sentence I'm trying to translate: "So revolutions broke out in city after city [...]" I think my translation works. I'm willing to sacrifice some literal accuracy for poetic effect, and I think this strikes the right balance. (I'm even bold enough to say it has an Okrandian feel to it.) My question is whether anyone else could make sense of my phrasing before I said what it meant. Thanks, bI'reng
