Hello, for playing the language bubble game, Maltz was asked for such a word. ---- For the archive: this is printed in qepHom 2017, page 20. ---- The verb is {ngon}. The noun is {ba'Suq}. Also... The verb {jo'} means "blow into a container of some kind" in the sense of "inflate, fill with air, blow up" ("blow up" like to blow up a balloon, not "explode"). It's used for blowing up a balloon, blowing into a paper bag (so you can then hit the bag against something so that it explodes with a loud noise), whatever it is that glass blowers do, and, yes, blow bubbles. It's not the same as {SuS}, which can also be used for blowing out a candle. With {SuS} you're blowing into/onto/at something, but the air gets out of the thing (or never goes in it). With {jo'}, the air is trapped in the thing and can't come out until you let it out (or the thing breaks). The object of both verbs is the thing you blow into/onto/at. If you use a {-Daq} construction, it implies that you missed – you blew towards the object, but the air bypassed it. ---- Additional information, not printed: The verb {ngon} describes what water does when it's boiling: It's bubbling. Also, if you blow with a straw into a glass of water, then it's also bubble-ing, i.e. making bubbles. The person does not {ngon}, they {ngonmoH} the water. The noun {ba'Suq} is used also for a chewing gum bubble, a soap bubble and so on. You can even have bubbles in the bath tub, and the foam in the bathtub is made of millions of bubbles, but the foam itself is not called bubble. For those interested in details, here's the transcript of talking to Marc Okrand at qepHom 2017 on Sunday, 19th November 2017, when he told me about {peD}: ---- MO: We just found a new word. LLL: Really? Tell me. MO: You got a piece of bread, a roll, with a hard crust, or whatever, and you cut it or you bite into it, it makes little crumbs. LLL: In German you would say "krümeln". "Das Brötchen krümelt." It means the little crumbs are falling out of it. MO: Yes. The Klingon word for that is {peD}. LLL: So, could there be other things falling out? MO: Maybe. LLL: Oh, {peD} is "snowing" anyway. So it can also be used for crumbs. MO: So the bread is doing that. Or has done that. LLL: Would there be other... Oh no, it's not transitive, so you cannot {peD} something. It's only {peD}. MO: [nods] LLL: Is there anything else we need to know? MO: Oh, probably. Most people need to know a lot of things. LLL: So I'll have the questions later. It's not a new word, anyway. MO: No. It's a new usage. LL: An extension of an existing word, I understand. MO: Yes. And that's one way to protect the three letters words. Cause they're an endangered species. You told me. LLL: You said it's for crumbs. What if I take confetti, for example, throw it in the air and it's raining down... so it's for everything falling down slowly? MO: [nods] LLL: But not rain? MO: No. LLL: So, water... Hello, Here comes some more clarifications for the words used in Klingon subtitles on Netflix: ---- For the archive: this is printed in qepHom 2017, page 15. ---- LLL: The "Klingon High Command" is called {ra'ghomquv}, and their "Operations Command" is called {yo'SeH yaHnIv}. What would be the Starfleet versions of these? MO: For "Starfleet Command," another alternative is {'ejyo' ra'ghomquv}, using {ra'ghomquv}, the word for "High Command." If Starfleet Command is of a lower level of importance than Starfleet High Command, leave off the {quv}, getting {ra'ghom}. But if Starfleet Command is the highest level (but, unlike the Klingons, just doesn't use the word "High" in its name), keep the {quv}. If "Starfleet Command" is more like "Starfleet Operations Command", then go with {'ejyo'SeH yaHnIv}. ---- For the archive: this is printed in qepHom 2017, page 20. ---- MO: {jonta' pa'} for "engineering" is fine for referring to the room where the engine is (or engines are). If "engineering" (as in "Scotty, go down to engineering and see what's happening there") means the place where the engines are controlled, that might be {jonSeH yaH}. {jonSeH} means something like "engine control" or "engine controlling." If the engines and the engine-control place are the same, {jonta' pa'} will work. LLL: I'm not sure if the engines are in the "engineering room", but on the other hand, the {jonSeH yaH} could be located on the bridge as well, right? MO: For "engineering," you're right. At the qepHom ask about the vonlu'

Another thing which perhaps needs clarification is the vonlu'. A little bird told me, that at the kgt it is written {bIvonlu'pu'} instead of {Davonlu'pu'}. So, this raises the question, whether the {-lu'} shoved up the {von} of {vonlu'} is the indefinite subject suffix which we all know and love, or whether it is just a {lu'} which happened to cross the street while this word was being created. So, could someone write {vonlu'lu'} for "someone has failed utterly " ? And if it is indeed the indefinite subject suffix {-lu'}, then for "someone again failed utterly", do we write {vonqa'lu'} or {vonlu'qa'} ? Because if we write {vonqa'lu'} how would someone be able to differentiate from the {vonqa'lu'} which would mean "someone trapped him/them again" ? I'm tired of having to "throw the cards" (greek expression meaning "trying to guess"), in order to clarify grammar which should have been already clarified at numerous qep'a'mey and qepHommey so far (as is the case with {ngIq}, the verb prefix after a {joq}, etc etc etc..). Okrand about typing the apostrophe

In addition to our recent discussion about how to display the apostrophe, Okrand's opinion is that he does not care: ---- For the archive: this is printed in qepHom 2017, page 22. ---- I use whichever apostrophe pops up in the word processor or email system or whatever that I happen to be using. For the books, the publisher decided what apostrophe to use (along with deciding on the font). My email automatically uses the straight apostrophe ('), so if I'm writing an email, that's the one that shows up. My word processor can use either one. By default, it uses the fancy one (’), so that's the one that usually shows up if I'm typing there. When I do that, I'm careful to not use its counterpart (the open single quote – ‘). I actually like the fancy one better, for typographical (not grammatical or linguistic) reasons, but it really doesn't make any difference which one is used. When I send an email that consists partly of something I type in the email system and partly of something I've cut and pasted from a Word document or the like, it may be the case that sometimes there's one apostrophe and other times there's another in the same email. But I try to avoid that. Either ’ or ' is fine with me for the apostrophe. It's ugly – but not outright wrong – to use both in the same document; pick one or the other. extended usage of peD

Hi, this usage appeared during breakfast, and Okrand later told me about it: When you cut your bread and the crumbs fall out (like snow), you use the verb {peD}. It can also be used for instance, when you throw confetti, and the confetti falls down, then use {peD}. So, with other words, {peD} still means "to snow", but it does not only refer to snow, but can also be used for other small things "falling down slowly" or "rain down", like ashes. During explaining, it seemed like the bread is the subject of {peD}, but also the breadcrumbs themselves. I don't know of a general word other than "snow". Maybe "rain down", but that's confusing, because rain still is {SIS}. Hello, Here comes some more clarifications for the words used in the Klingon subtitles of DSC on Netflix: ---- For the archive: this is printed in qepHom 2017, page 15. ---- FYI: "Gormaganders are a non-atmospheric organism capable of living in the vacuum of space. Not technically a fish, but described as essentially a "space whale", as of 2256, they were on the Endangered Species List." (Memory Alpha) ---- Maltz had not heard about this animal and did not know about a native Klingon name. He was guessing that the word "gormagander" is a Federation Standard word. Maybe it's taken into English from some other language, but as long as that language is not Klingon, we (Klingon speakers) don't care. Regardless of its origin, it's now an English word. He just called it {ghormaghenDer}. The Klingons learned the name of this thing the same way the Federation did – from someone else. But it's still possible that there are other ways to name this animal that we do not know of. ---- {chIl} means "lose" in the sense of "misplace, be unable to find, lose track of." It can be used for misplacing your keys, but also for things like losing the signal of something you've been tracking. "Lose" in the sense of "no longer have (presumably permanently)", as in "we've lost a lot of soldiers" is a different word: {weS}. This verb means "lose" in the sense of "undergo a reduction of" or "suffer a reduction of", as in "he lost a lot of blood". To say "lose" as in "She lost the baby" or "She lost her husband" just say {Heghpu' ghu} or {Heghpu' loDnalDaj}. Hello, Here comes some more clarifications for the words used in Klingon subtitles: ---- For the archive: this is printed in qepHom 2017, page 14. ---- I think you can use either {tlhu'moH} "tempt" or {ngel} "attract, lure". In either case, I suspect you'd use the {-meH} suffix.
