Maltz about castles

SPOILER FREE information from Maltz about a word used in the Klingon subtitles of Star Trek: Discovery: a "palace". -------------------------------- In English, a "castle" is (typically) a building built for protection or fortification. It can, but doesn't have to be, pretty fancy, but its primary function is defense. A "palace," on the other hand, is (typically) a building built to show off wealth, power, and/or importance, but it's not necessarily the best place to be during a battle. Having said that, in day-to-day 21st-Century English, the distinction isn't always so clear. For Klingons, the distinction is also a little murky, since they would never construct a "palace" (a home for the emperor or some other important person) that was not designed deal with battles. They might construct a "castle," though, that wasn't particularly lavish and not a suitable place for an official residence of the emperor. The word for such a structure — elegant or otherwise -- is {jem'IH}. The emperor's castle/palace is simply {ta' jem'IH}. If, however, the emphasis is to be on the elegance or grandeur of the {jem'IH}, there's another word that can be used: {DuHmor}. A {DuHmor} is a type of {jem'IH}, so it's a good place for the emperor to hang out. For clarify, you can say {ta' DuHmor}. The emperor's official residence would more likely be referred to as a {DuHmor} than a {jem'IH}, but not necessarily always. Klingon ships, of course, are battle-ready, so any ship designed to be the residence of the emperor might, I suppose, be referred to as a {jem'IH} or {ta' jem'IH}. And if it's a particularly grand place, then {DuHmor} or {ta' DuHmor} could make sense. (Maybe those are short for {jem'IH Duj} and {DuHmor Duj}.) -------------------------------- -- Lieven L. Here is some information from Maltz that I can forward with NO SPOILERS concerning the coming episodes of ST:Discovery: Okrand suggested a way to say "polite" in Klingon, using {DochHa'}. For the glossary, he added: ------------------------- "be polite" is okay. Also "be civil, courteous." Very un-Klingon! ------------------------- Next, we talked about a "prophet". Not the religious person like Jesus or Mohammed, but more some kind of a person who seems to be able to see or know things that others can't. Okrand forwarded this from Maltz: ------------------------- This is a {tuch rItwI'} (or, if the context is clear, {rItwI'} for short). {tuch rIt} means "to prophesize, see the future, know the future." Hello again, Here are some more words that were asked by several people: ---- For the archive: this is printed in qepHom 2017, page 8. ---- {mI'wI' much} n. "dance show", a show consisting of people dancing. It can be used to translate "cabaret" if the cabaret show consists entirely or nearly entirely of dancing, but that's a special and infrequent situation. {much Qe'} n. "cabaret", means the location, such as a nightclub or restaurant where there's food/drink along with a show. {Qe' much} n. "cabaret" means the show performed in such a place. {Huj} is "strange" as in unfamiliar {jum} is "odd" as in peculiar, unexpected, fishy {taQ} is "weird" as in bizarre, unnatural, maybe creepy An "odd number" is {mI' mob} An "even number" is {mI' mobHa'} In appropriate contexts, the {mI'} could be left out. {tem} v. "deny" means "contradict, disavow, claim as false" and the like. It does not mean "refuse, reject, turn down, don't permit" In TKD, {DenIb} and {DenIbya'} are both glossed "Denebia." But that's an error. The planet name in English is Deneb, not Denebia. But this coming-and-going -ya' thing crept its way into the English side of the dictionary somehow. HIvqa' veqlargh!
