Bing Translator pIqaD support...

Before anybody scolds me for using Bing Translator, I was only using it as a convenient way to convert text into Unicode pIqaD on computers/devices that didn’t already have an appropriate pIqaD input method installed. Anyway, it seems I can’t do that anymore, since it looks like Bing Translator underwent a redesign recently (within the past few weeks it seems), and now only supports “Klingon” and not “Klingon (pIqaD)”. wejpuH. I whipped up a three-way transliterator as a replacement. It has the added benefit of being a self-contained HTML file, so you can keep a copy on your computer and use it without network access. It should be fairly OS/browser agnostic, but let me know if you run into any problems. I’ll probably style it (including adding a web font so you don’t have to have a pIqaD font installed) later. For the translation of the intro of a famous German children TV show I have asked Marc Okrand how I'd best name their main characters which are a mouse and an elephant. Okrand talked to Maltz and replied with the following. It's not really a new word, but at least some canon spelling of a terran animal. --------------------------------------- Lieven — I think {Qa'Hom} is okay for "mouse." And Maltz wasn't aware of any native Klingon elephant-like animal. So go with a Klingon version of Federation Standard. For the Klingon subtitles in episode 114, Marc Okrand could get Maltz to talk again, and revealed the following words. All of the following are direct quotes of Okrand: {QIl} v. "be desperate", as when there's no way out, they have nothing to lose. This includes ideas like "last-ditch, do-or-die, hopeless, doomed." {maleSya'} n. Malaysia Think of {rang} as "be responsible for." As I mentioned, it takes an object ({ngoy'} does not). {rang} cannot be used as an adjective. ------- Using {qaw} "remember" seems to work in your example of {Dochmey qawbogh} "things he remembers/remembered." But I agree — it's a little awkward. And what one remembers should probably be described as something better or descriptive than simply "things." We've got {qawHaq} "memory banks." Maltz didn't know what {Haq} in this word was. (He said it has nothing to do with surgery — that's just a coincidence.) But {qaw}, he said, is a perfectly fine noun meaning "memory" in the sense of the ability to remember or the power of recall. It does not refer to specific memories or recollections. That's a different word: {wov'on}. It's more common to hear {wov'on qaw} "he/she remembers a memory" than {wov'on ghaj} "he/she has a memory," though the colloquial (English) translation of the former would be "he/she has a memory." Someone who remembers a lot of stuff or who can easily remember things (like dates or lines of a play) may be said to have a {qaw pov} "excellent memory." ------- Regarding the verb "compare", I (Lieven) asked whether this would work: {A-mey patlhmoH C} "C sorts his A" (for instance, his socks) Okrand said: ------- In general, yes. Maltz about terraforming

This didn't comne through the first time, so here we go again. Don't know what happened. Maltz has revealed some words which I don't want to keep secret from you any longer. I'm sending them in individual messages to keep the subject line separated. ---begin quote------------ The Klingon verb {ghe'} is the one most likely to be involved here. It means "be transformed, transmuted, metamorphosed, totally altered." In context, if someone said {maS Daghe'moH'a'?} (literally "Are you transforming a moon?"), this would be understood to mean "Are you terraforming a moon?" If context isn't clear, then there'd have to be more verbiage: {tera' chu' DachenmoHmeH, maS Daghe'moH'a'?} "In order to create a new Earth, are you transforming a moon?") or {maSDaq yInmeH Humanpu', 'oH Daghe'moH'a'?} "In order that Humans live [be alive] on the moon, are you transforming it?" or {yInvaD maS Daghe'moH'a'?} "Are you transforming a moon to benefit life?" (clunky translation). I assume that the word "field" in "terraforming field" refers to a energy field of some sort that causing the terraforming to happen (and not to a plot of land that's undergoing terraforming). If so, the shortcut way to refer to that field would be {ghe'chem}; a longer way would be {ghe'moHbogh HoSchem}. But, as above, if context is lacking, there'd have to be some additional stuff to make the nature of the transformation clear. ---end quote------------ -- Lieven L. I flipped the direction of the curve of the lower part of {r} and extended it outwards to hopefully let it look more familiar. As for {tlh}, yes, I was going for a reuse of the top part of {ch}, and just changed the curve of the right side. I’ve redrawn it to still use the “hook” from {ch} but with a larger and more pointed to the right bowl. Here’s a screenshot with the current letter shapes; I’ll wait another couple of days for additional feedback, and hopefully have a font to share with everyone within the next couple of weeks.
