why we shouldn't do transcriptions

This is a topic that comes back over and over, and there are divided opinions: Some strictly say DON'T, others say Why not? Well, I just noticed a nice event that shows what can happen: (and even though I may mix up something, It's a good example) Step 1: Many years ago, somebody translated The Gospel of John into Klingon. While doing so, they decided to transcribe many names. One of them is "peter" which turned out to pe'tlhoS, probably based on Latin Petrus. Step 2: Somehow, this text was added to the database of Bing. The software started to learn and found out the word for "Peter" (which is actually nonsense, because it's a name that should not be translated, but that's another topic). Step 3: Some lazy workers at FOX studios uses Bing to translate a Klingon dialogue. And so, the Klingon version of "Peter" pops up in Family Guy! Step 4: If anyone who knows nothing about Klingon, Okrand, our group's conventions, or anything, tries to analyze that text - assuming they find out the corrected grammar - they will also find that pe'tlhoS is Klingon for "Peter". BUT IT'S NOT! So you see how one apparently minor insignificant decision can have large consequences many years later. That's why I still keep insisting that translators should avoid making transliterations and making up new words as much as possible. Just my 2 cents on this. During Episode 12, Season 18 of "Family Guy", there was some Klingon language spoken. Unfortunately, the producers decided to use Bing translator, so the result is mostly nonsense gibberish. irrealis {net jal} and the {net jalchugh}

Suppose we say: {tlhIngan SoH net jalchugh..} The literal translation of this phrase is, "if someone imagines that you're a klingon..". However, for reasons I never understood, its' "final" translation is "if you were a klingon..". Why is this mismatch happening ? Is it a "because maltz said so" thing or something ? Anyways, moving on.. Assume that there are two klingons speaking, with regard to a recent romulan incursion. So, one of them asks: "how did it go ?" And the second wants to reply by saying "it could have been bad, but luckily..". I'm wondering.. Could we express this by saying something like the following ? {qablaHpu' ghu' net jal..} The literal translation would be "the situation has been able to be bad"; but why couldn't we translate this klingon sentence as in the {net jalchugh} case, thus producing the meaning: "the situation could be bad" ? Could we use the {net jal} on its own, producing a similar irrealis, (or however the @!#@ it's called), with the {net jalchugh} ? mayqel qunen'oS

This is a poll to check your opinion or your knowledge: I'm working on a dictionary as part of the Klingon Language Wiki. Now I wondered: How much do people know the word "in/transitive"? Does it maybe sound too technical? Would it be more useable to say a) - "this is a transitive verb" or b) - "this verb can take an object" -- Lieven L.
