The suffix {-lI'} is to be used when there's an ongoing action, proceeding towards a known goal or stopping point. So I wonder.. If there's an ongoing action, taking place during another action, or during a specified time period, then couldn't that ongoing action be "by definition" described by the {-lI'} ? In other words, if we have a {-taHvIS} during which an ongoing action takes place, then couldn't this ongoing action *always* be expressed by the {-lI'} ? With the "stopping point" of the {-lI'} being the end of the action/time period described by the {-taHvIS} ? Examples: The {qaStaHvIS wej rep, romuluS SuvtaH yaS}, could be instead {qaStaHvIS wej rep, romuluS SuvlI' yaS}, with the "known stopping point" being the end of the three-hour period. The {jISeDtaHvIS, QoQ vIQoytaH}, could be also {jISeDtaHvIS QoQ vIQoylI'}, with the "known stopping point" being the end of "my driving". I can't thing of an example like the ones mentioned, where the {-taHvIS} can't be followed by a {-lI'} instead of a {-taH}. Of course, since I'm not sure with regards to all this, I'd love to hear any opinion on the matter. ~ mayqel qunen'oS

vIb - propagate

I have again one of these annoying but important transitivity questions. It's a bit influenced by the point that I don't know the English word: {vIb} "travel trough time", can also mean "propagate", and we are told that it's not about plants. So what does "propagate" mean, and how would I use that? Does anyone remember if Okrand said something about it? One example of the "travel" version shows that vIb is transitive. The problem with po'

The verb {po'} is given as "be expert, skilled". The problem though is, that while "to be skilled", is one thing, "to be expert" is quite another. Now, I can understand the crap we usually say, that "context will clarify", but there are times when context *can't* clarify, or in order for it to do so, the main story will need to be disrupted losing its' intended focus. What is a {Qel po'} ? An expert i.e. a specialist ? Or someone "skilled", who can be just a med-school graduate with many years of experience, but nowhere near the level of a specialist ? And now I know.. Someone is itching to write nonsense like "explain which of the two cases you mean, in the text".. So, in a loong passage, one will take a pause from the main story, to explain which of the two meanings of {po'} he means.. Then, one paragraph later, he will take another pause from the main story, to clarify the next similar-to-po' word. And perhaps, two paragraphs later, the same will happen again.. I don't think this is the optimal way to write, or (to be more accurate) to be forced to write. ~ mayqel qunen'oS

UltraLingua

The Good News: UltraLingua now has a 64-bit version that runs in MacOS 10.15, Catalina. If you had the old version, you can go to their Web site, write an Email to their developer guys and they give you a link to download the new ones, and directions on how to get around MacOS security to run an app that isn’t signed by Apple. It’s more complicated than it was even recently. You try to run it, you get the choice of either moving it to the trash or canceling, then you go to System Preferences, Security and Privacy, General, and you see the note that UltraLingua was blocked, and you choose to run it anyway. Twice. And then it runs. The Bad News: The dictionary is really, really old. I looked up “drill” and “bore”. Nope. So, unless you do a lot of data entry, your phone will have a better dictionary than your Mac. Will Martin willmartin2(a)mac.com
