Kelpian

Warning: If you haven't seen the Star Trek Discovery episode "The Brightest Star" (released Dec. 6, 2018), this post possibly contains minor spoilers. In the Season 1 episode "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum", the species name "Kelpian" was rendered as *{qelpIya'ngan} in the subtitles. In the recently released short episode "The Brightest Star" which tells the origin of Saru, we learn that the name of his species' home planet is actually Kaminar, and they share a planet with the Ba'ul, who harvest the Kelpians for food. So both *{ba'ul} and Kelpians are *{qamInarngan}, and it's unclear if *{qelpIya'} is actually a place name. (Perhaps *{qelpIya'} is a place on *{qamInar} where the Kelpians come from. Or perhaps the Star Trek Discovery writers made up the word "Kelpian" without thinking very much about how it might be parsed.) -- De'vID

Does anyone know of any canon examples of {-moH} being used with a no object prefix? Or having an English translation that appears to be using an indefinite object (indefinite subject of the main verb)? Or presenting the main verb in the infinitive in the English translation? Jeremy

I'd never had much cause to think about the difference between {lot} and {Qugh} until someone asked a question about them on Duolingo. To make sure I was giving accurate information, I asked Dr. Okrand to clarify if they were purely synonyms or if there was some difference between them. Here is the relevant part of the response he sent me by email today: They're basically the same and mostly interchangeable. If you're referring to something that in all likelihood you can't recover from (like the loss of Praxis), the better word is {lot}, but most of the time it doesn't matter. Jeremy
