Warning: If you haven't seen the Star Trek Discovery episode "The Brightest Star" (released Dec. 6, 2018), this post possibly contains minor spoilers. In the Season 1 episode "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum", the species name "Kelpian" was rendered as *{qelpIya'ngan} in the subtitles. In the recently released short episode "The Brightest Star" which tells the origin of Saru, we learn that the name of his species' home planet is actually Kaminar, and they share a planet with the Ba'ul, who harvest the Kelpians for food. So both *{ba'ul} and Kelpians are *{qamInarngan}, and it's unclear if *{qelpIya'} is actually a place name. (Perhaps *{qelpIya'} is a place on *{qamInar} where the Kelpians come from. Or perhaps the Star Trek Discovery writers made up the word "Kelpian" without thinking very much about how it might be parsed.) -- De'vID

To be nitpicking, I'd call this episode a "Short Treks" episode, since it's not available ouside of the US and so not entirely part of DSC. (that's not clear from how you wrote it so may confusing for future reference)

Which is not canon nor confirmed by Okrand.

Just like the {tlhIngan} are from {Qo'noS} :-) Another sidenote, which I think is even a lot more interesting: The language spoken by the Kelpians in that episode was created by Marc Okrand! -- Lieven L. The even better question is, if these names don't come from 'oqranD, then why should we concern ourselves with them. ~ mayqel *I love maltz* qunen'oS

Because some of us are discussing Discovery in Klingon, so we're going to use the words actually used in the show or in the subtitles whether they come from Okrand or not. Also, to my knowledge, Okrand has never contradicted any Klingon which has appeared on a show. He sort of makes a point of accepting everything alleged to be Klingon spoken on a Star Trek show as authentic Klingon, even if it may be dialectical or jargon or ritually archaic or whatever. (Subtitles are a slightly different story, though, since they're not actually spoken as Klingon in-universe.) If someone were to say "Kelpian" in Klingon on the show in the future, I'd be very surprised if the word doesn't match the one already used in the subtitles. -- De'vID
