Dr. Okrand didn't clarify when {net X} would be used as opposed to {'e' Xlu'}, but acknowledged that multiple uses of {-lu'} in a complex sentence refer back to the same indefinite subject. In {Heghlu'DI' mobbe'lu'chugh QaQqu'Hegh wanI'}, the subject of {Hegh} is the same as the subject of {mobbe'}. (There are several other examples in canon, but this sentence happens to appear in the paq'batlh.) This seems to explain some instances of {'e' Xlu'} that we've seen, namely, {yInlu'taH 'e' bajnISlu'}, {yay chavlu' 'e' bajnISlu'}, and {DIvI' rojmab qep ghanglu' 'e' nIDlu'}. It would also seem to imply that {vImuHlu' net wuqHa'} means the person who commuted the execution is not the same as the person who performs the execution, whereas {vImuHlu' 'e' wuqHa'lu'} would imply they're the same person. But it does not explain {Qang QanmeH yan 'ISletlh Damuv 'e' wIvlu'} (rather than {net wIv}) or {SIS 'e' 'aqlu'} (rather than {SIS net 'aq}). -- De'vID

slang vs. idiomatic usage

Hello dear friends, I'm expanding this topic from a discussion on Facebook. I'm not claiming that I'm right with this, but just want to hear your opinion or clarification on this. Basis: Okrand sometimes gives words he labels as "used idiomatically", such as {Soj}. He also sometimes has words he calls "slang". The point: Someone said that in the context of Klingon, "single words used idiomatically" would be what is called "slang". I think that is not the case, but I might be wrong, maybe I confuse something. My opinion is based on this: After all, why would KGT have two separate chapters for this? On page 21, it talks about "slang and idiomatic usages", so clearly makes a difference: "slang" AND "idiomatic usage". From my knowledge, and what KGT also says, is that slang refers to terms used in a special way (think of English "bucks" or "greenbacks" for "dollar note") while idoms are phrases or words with an additionaly meaning (like "raining cats and dogs"). Also, slang is [mostly] used by younger people in a colloquial way while idioms are set parts of the language and both young and old people use it, and can also be used in written language, which one would avoid with slang terms. {So'} and {meQ}

Based on previous usage, the verbs {So'} "hide" and {meQ} "burn" seem to mean both "subject does something to object" and "subject experiences the thing that would've been done to the object" when there is no object. Dr. Okrand told me that the intended meaning of {So'} is that the subject hides the object, and that the TKD example {nuqDaq So'taH yaS} means "Where is the officer hiding [something]?" He apparently messed it up when he simplified the example to focus on the usage of {nuqDaq}. The way it's done in Star Trek Into Darkness, {DaH pIghvamDaq So''eghtaH}, is correct for when someone hides themselves. A {So'wI'} is a device that hides something else, and {yISo'rup} means "prepare to hide [the ship]". (This affects a line in the paq'batlh where {-'egh} will be added in the 2ed.) I think he's a bit reluctant to declare that something in TKD is an error when it can be avoided, so I think what we can say about it is that {So'} usually means the subject hides the object (or hides something in general, if there's no object), but that for reasons unknown, there are rare instances where it's used without an object to mean the subject is hiding itself. (And then we can just ignore the TKD example sentence, since every other example uses the "subject hides object" meaning.) The verb {meQ} is used several times in the paq'batlh. It's also been used several times previously, elsewhere. I presented Dr. Okrand with all of the usages of {meQ} and also several possible definitions corresponding to those usages: "burn, be on fire", "burn, cause to be on fire", "be burnt". He wrote that it would normally have the first definition (and thus {meQmoH} is needed to express setting something on fire). However, due to the influence of {mIQ}, {meQ} is used differently in the context of food preparation. Thus, you could say {to'waQ meQ vutwI'} "the cook burns the tendon" and {Ha'DIbaHmey meQ} "burnt animals", but not *{juH qachDaj meQ} "he burned his house" or *{qach meQ} "a burnt building" (I guess unless you're talking about someone who eats buildings as a part of their cuisine). The paq'batlh consistently uses {meQ} to mean "be on fire" and {meQmoH} to mean "set on fire". -- De'vID

{-taHjaj}

In TKD (p. 175-176) it is stated that: <When [{-jaj}] is used, there is never a Type 7 aspect suffix.> However, this "rule" is violated by {wo' ghawran DevtaHjaj} / {wo' DevtaHjaj ghawran} (KGT p. 25-26) (The first is a toast with special grammar, but the second is meant to be a normal sentence.) There are several lines in the paq'batlh with {-taHjaj} as well. I asked Dr. Okrand about this, and he said that {-taHjaj} is allowed under certain circumstances and that there are exceptions to the rule which were missed in TKD, but he did not elaborate on what they were. (Star Trek Discovery also had the line {tlhIngan maH; taHjaj}, which Qov cleverly split to avoid breaking the above "rule", but apparently {tlhIngan maHtaHjaj} would've been okay too.) -- De'vID
