Meaning of *ghaytanHa'*

In PB we read the sentence: *ghaytanHa' QapDI' SuvtaH*. The literal meaning is something like *When it was unlikely that he would win, he still fought* (I hope my English is here right!). Is always the meaning of *ghaytanHa' Qap* *it's unlikely that he will win*, or is it also possible to interpret it as *he wins in an unlikely manner*, i.e., *he wins although it was unlikely*. And if not, how could this meaning be rendered? Thank you!

We can say {vIparHa’lu’}, (somebody likes me), and {wIparHa’lu’} (somebody likes us), but we can’t say *DIparHa’lu’* (multiple somebodies like us). It’s specifically disallowed by the grammar. Maybe this can be useful. In German, the indefinite subject *man* is always grammatically singular, but depending on context, it can be interpreted as *one indefinite person*, *several indefinite persons* or *people in general*, and although it's singular, it can combine with *each other* (*einander*): *Man hilft einander* (*One helps each other -> People help each other). As an aside: Maybe I'm wrong, but I've always thought of the way prefixes work with *-lu'* when there is an object as a funny way to reflect the typical transformations from active to passive, i.e., the object in active become the subject in passive and the subject in active become the agent in passive, so *One has eaten the cakes* (he / she - them) become *The cakes have been eaten by someone* (they - by him / her). Just a short question: With no object *-lu'* takes always the prefix 0, right?

e All modern greeks (myself included) can understand the old greek used in writing the gospels. Bur unless a modern greek (myself included) has seriously studied ancient greek in university, he can't understand (let alone speak) ancient greek (i.e. the greek spoken by achilles, leonidas, etc..) So if a modern greek travelled back in time, lets say in the time the parthenon was built, and met an ancient greek of that time, then with the exception of just a few words, they wouldn't be able to understand each other. Is there anything strange in using {-'egh}/{-chuq} with {-lu'}? Quch'eghlu' QuchchuqmoHlu' I don't see anything grammatically wrong, but using {-'egh}/{-chuq} with {-lu'}, gives me the feeling as in using {-lu'} with {-wI'} (e.g. HIvlu'wI'), which although it doesn't break any rules, it's something we don't actually use. ~ Dana'an
