Can we use {chabal} on its own ?
We have the word {chabal}, which so far the only way I've seen it used, is in the context of {chabal tetlh} i.e. "list of something desired". But could we use it on its own ? For example if I write: {chabalmeylIjmo' bIbech} "because of the things you desire you suffer" Would it be correct ? Would it make sense ? ~ mayqel *I love maltz* qunen'oS

I see no reason why not. -- De'vID

chabal was given as a word on its own, independent of tetlh, in the new words list from the Saarbrücken qepHom'a' 2015. So it would seem it’s meant to be used without tetlh just as much as it is with tetlh.

We’ve seen similar words to {chabal} “something desired or requested” – e.g. {potlh} “something important, consequential thing” but also {tu'HomI'raH} “something useless” and {Ho'} “something deserving of respect, someone worthy of emulation” (slang). -- Voragh From: Daniel Dadap On Feb 11, 2019, at 07:13, De'vID <de.vid.jonpin@gmail.com<mailto:de.vid.jonpin@gmail.com>> wrote: Am Mo., 11. You mean, that we have seen them been used on their own, without being part of a noun-noun construction ?
What does it matter if they're used on their own or in a noun-noun construction? {HurDaq tu'HomI'raHvetlh yIlan!} "Get that piece of junk out of here!" (Klingon CD game) {yo'SeH yaHnIvvo' potlh De' wIHevtaH.} "We are receiving a priority message from Operations Command." (HolQeD 8.4, line cut from Star Trek V) {tu'HomI'raH} was used alone. {potlh} was used in the noun-noun construction {potlh De'} "priority message", but its meaning of "something important" is clear from its usage. -- De'vID
I love the way you guys can find stuff in canon. SuDojchu’. An alternative translation for {potlh De’} might be, “Information of an important thing”. I remember being surprised that he didn’t use the adjectival version of the word and say {De’ potlh} “important information”. Meanwhile, I can also see the potential is to feel that the information itself was not important. It’s the thing the information is about that is important, like if you knew the code name of a secret operation, the name is not really important, but the operation is, and the name is information about the operation. charghwI’ vaghnerya’ngan rInpa’ bomnIS be’’a’ pI’.
