There's no known word that means exactly this, but you could come up with some synonyms. *reHmeH jan */device for playing/ *tu'HomI'raH */something useless/ -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
{mIl'oD ngeb} is given for "teddy bear" in Talk Now. I'd shy away from {tu'HomI'raH} unless it really has no use. Play, in general, is how children learn. Toys assist with this. Some toys are educational by design. On Fri, Mar 3, 2017 at 1:24 PM, SuStel <sustel@trimboli.name> wrote:

I did not mean to suggest that *tu'HomI'raH* is an equivalent of /toy,/ only that in some situations it might be an appropriate substitute. -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
Young Alexandra had a white stuffed toy tribble which she carried with her everywhere on the Enterprise-D (TNG "When the Bough Breaks") and Molly had a purple stuffed targ which was seen occasionally in the O’Briens’ quarters. (DS9 various episodes). *{yIH ngeb}, *{targh ngeb}, etc. following the pattern. --Voragh From: Michael Roney, Jr. {mIl'oD ngeb} is given for "teddy bear" in Talk Now. <sustel@trimboli.name<mailto:sustel@trimboli.name>> wrote: On 3/3/2017 1:20 PM, Christa Hansberry wrote: Is there any way to say "toy"? boQwI' didn't bring up anything. Interesting; so literally a fake [sabre] bear. So do you think one could say "puH Duj ngeb" for a toy car, and similarly with other toys designed to resemble real objects?

Yeah, I wouldn't say toys are essentially useless, but I think that would work in some contexts. Thank you! -QISta'

Possibly. You might also consider something like {velqa'} or {velqa'Hom}. Personally, I might call a toy car a {reHmeH puH Duj velqa'Hom}, but drop the {reHmeH} if it's clear that one's talking about playing. ________________________________ From: tlhIngan-Hol <tlhingan-hol-bounces@lists.kli.org> on behalf of Christa Hansberry <chransberry@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, March 3, 2017 22:01 To: KLI mailing list Subject: Re: [tlhIngan Hol] how to say "toy"? I translate e.g. "toy tricorder" as {puq Hoqra'}. My rendition of The Christmas Song substitutes {QujmeH tepmey pov} for "toys and goodies" (back-translated as "excellent playtime cargo"). -- ghunchu'wI'
