I feel like there must be a cinematic reference here. "Lightning Bill" (or "Lightnin' Bill") was the name of several movie characters. But I can't figure out what the {pe'} is doing there. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017066/ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129202/ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027886/ -- De'vID

Okay, maybe far fetched, but the Actor is William Bailey. Bailey William Bai--- Bill--- pe' bIl Just a thought... -- Lieven L. Litaer aka the "Klingon Teacher from Germany" http://www.klingonisch.de http://www.klingonwiki.net/En/StarTrekDiscovery

Well, if we're going to stretch that much, it might be that there's no pun at all, or Okrand thought "Lightning Bill" but decided {bIl} was too short and added a meaningless syllable, or he though {bIl} and then decided to make it more similar to {pe'vIl}. Or maybe Okrand has a Pebble smartwatch and it shows a little "lightning" symbol whenever he charges it, and that's why he thinks "pebble" whenever he thinks "lightning". Also, how would one express "stretch" (as in literally pull something apart like an elastic band) in Klingon? I guess for the metaphorical meaning a Klingon might say something like {notlhchoH tonSaw'lIj} or {chatlh Dajab}. -- De'vID

Also, just now when I looked at the other lightning word, {raw}, I see the German "blitzen", which makes me think of "Blitzkrieg", and what is "Krieg" but {raw} backwards? But I very much doubt that's what Marc Okrand was thinking, unless you had something to do with it. -- De'vID

rey - squeeze and stretch like an accordion It evokes in my mind having to work at forcing evidence to fit a theory. Much like I am doing now. luH - yank, or slang for make someone confess Wringing a confession out of a word seems to be an appropriate idea here. -- ghunchu'wI'

If you really are talking about a literal physical stretching, would SachmoH work?

Are you sure it's not just supposed to sound like {pe'vIl}? That's the way I remember that word, at least.
