Re: [tlhIngan Hol] new puns
A few puns have immediately stuck out at me: Daw (blow, of the wind): blow down? gha'naD (fodder): "Hello mudduh, hello fadduh/Here I am at Camp Granada . . ." ghIp'IS (friction): where the GRIP IS HapmaH (pea): Having to "pee" is a "wee matter". la'rut'an (mica): "Natural" backwards. Maybe because mica is a natural substance, maybe because Micah Papp (better known as Manny the Hippie) went all "natural". mo'bIj (latch): Jibboom backwards. ngit (ride, as in a bicycle/motorcycle): Cycling helps you stay "fit"! A xifan pun, with f->ng. ro'leSlib (barnacle): Bill, sailor -- Barnacle Bill the Sailor. My own prediction, *bIlbernaD*, wasn't far off. roq (be fragile, delicate, flimsy): From "bROKen". 'a'baqa' (file, dossier, portfolio): Manila folders were traditionally made of abaca', a zingiberaceous plant also known as Manila hemp. 'achme (anvil): Anvils on Looney Toons (and Animaniacs) were always made by the corporation knwn as Acme. C->ch is a perfect match in xifan. 'aghnIDnem (fuse): "Mending a fuse", as the Beatles song goes.
Also, *luDnam'a'* for "fractal" . . . something to do with Mandelbrot (*Mandel* meaning "almond" in German)?
Found two more: nutye' (olive tree): The reverse, *'eytun*, is in the middle of *aceituna*, the Spanish word for "olive". yong'el (psychedelic [drug]): Backwards, this is *lengoy* -- trip-y, or "trippy".

The Spanish word comes from Arabic, in which it is "zeytun" (also borrowed into Persian, Turkish, and a number of other languages). I believe the Hebrew word is close as well (something like "zayit"). -- De'vID
Both of my requests, "Jew", and "peanut", got in this year. (Though I sent in my qepHom requests a couple of days ago and asked whether *ju'Da* refers only to the Jewish faith, or whether it can refer to ethnic Jews too.) However, I found myself puzzling over the pun behind the word for peanut, *qonglIl*. Until a few minutes ago, that is. I looked at the ng and wondered if it could be a xifan pun. I transliterated it into xifan: koflil. Then turned it backwards: lilfok. Then it hit me! Li'l Folks was the original name of Charles Schulz's comic strip, Peanuts. My prediction for "peanut" also looked to the comic strip: *vanpel*. So I'd score 1 point on that.

It wasn't the same comic strip with Peanuts' recurring characters, but it did have the same format of "wise" kids and similar themes. -- ghunchu'wI'
Daw (blow, of the wind): blow down?
I think it's "wad" backwards, as in "to blow one's wad".
won = hesitate
The opposite of "now".
le''aq = messenger
Qun le''aq ≈ angel
Possibly qa''el backwards, from Michael, the archangel.
tlhIneng = potassium
Possibly from xifan hol "fenix". Perhaps related to potassium burning in water?
tI'var = pedal in a car
tI'var -> rav'It -> "floor it"
'aSteD = job, occupation
Possibly "a stead". Literally a place, but a stead can also by extension refer to one's place or role in society. Alternatively, people may look for *a stead*y job. //loghaD ________________________________ From: tlhIngan-Hol <tlhingan-hol-bounces@lists.kli.org> on behalf of James Landau via tlhIngan-Hol <tlhingan-hol@lists.kli.org> Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2024 2:10:20 AM To: tlhingan-hol@lists.kli.org Cc: James Landau Subject: Re: [tlhIngan Hol] new puns A few puns have immediately stuck out at me: Daw (blow, of the wind): blow down? gha'naD (fodder): "Hello mudduh, hello fadduh/Here I am at Camp Granada . . ." ghIp'IS (friction): where the GRIP IS HapmaH (pea): Having to "pee" is a "wee matter". la'rut'an (mica): "Natural" backwards. So far, nobody saw a pun in "be holy", and I feel like it's just not hidden... It's just "Yeah!" -- Lieven L. Litaer aka the "Klingon Teacher from Germany" https://tlhInganHol.com https://klingon.wiki/En/NewWordsQepa31

It's almost certainly either inspired by or alluding to something Biblical, though the word is so short it could be any number of things. For example, it might be from the phrase "be ye holy, for I am holy". Or it could be a reference to one of the names of God (the one Latinised as "Jehovah" in some translations of the Bible). The "el" in {le''aq} is probably also a reference to a name of God. -- De'vID

When I see it, the only thing I can think of is Kanye West (i.e. Ye), but I really hope that isn't it. - SapIr
