Another info from #qepHom2019 The noun {ghom} is used only for groups of people. {mu'ghom} is an exception. Marc Okrand said that {ghom} sound weird for a group of trees or similar. For that, there is a different word, but he didn't say what. -- Lieven L. As we said before, that's a different word. Am 18.11.2019 um 12:12 schrieb mayqel qunen'oS:
I can't understand, why okrand does that. I just can't..
Is it sooo difficult, to make up a word ?
Maybe it is. First of all, Okrand wants to avoid mistakes and needs to look it up. Next, he tries to make connections to other words sometimes, like we saw with 'an plus 'an'or or wa'leS and leS. And third, he maybe wants to find a nice pun for it. So instead of simply saying something like "it's GNFHR", he wants to take his time. -- Lieven L. On the other hand, instead of {Ha'DIbaH *herd* tu'lu'}, I could alternatively say: {'op Ha'DIbaHmey tu'lu'} {'op Ha'DIbaHmey luyIrlu'pu'bogh tu'lu'} {'op Ha'DIbaHmey lulIqlu'pu'bogh tu'lu'} And since, according to m-w: "round up" transitive verb: 1: to collect (animals, such as cattle) by means of a roundup 2: to gather in or bring together from various quarters Perhaps, curtain number 3: {'op Ha'DIbaHmey lulIqlu'pu'bogh tu'lu'} is the way to go, if it's about a herd of domestic animals.. But if the animals aren't domestic, then we should be thankful (again) for the completeness and perfection of the klingon language.. ~ gha'cher qIj
However though.. Even if the animals aren't domestic, then perhaps I could write: {'op tay'bogh Ha'DIbaHmey} So, perhaps the lesson from all this, is that even if there are words missing, one should instead of complaining, sit his Sa'Hut on a chair, and think until he finds the answer.. Maybe {ghom} applies only to people because it’s a backwards transliteration of the abbreviation for Massive Multiuser Online Game (MMOG) and things don’t play these games? charghwI’ vaghnerya’ngan rInpa’ bomnIS be’’a’ pI’.
