Klingon Word of the Day for Saturday, June 23, 2018 Klingon word: tey Part of speech: verb Definition: scrape Source: KGT This Klingon Word of the Day is brought to you by qurgh (qurgh@kli.org).
Klingon word: tey Part of speech: verb Definition: scrape _______________________________________________ (KGT 79): Statues are carved of stone ({nagh}, rock, stone) by various techniques. Thus, among other things, the sculptor ({Hew chenmoHwI'} [literally, "statue creator") may {nan} (gouge), {tey} (scrape), or {ghItlh} (engrave). To apply these techniques, specialized tools are employed: the {nanwI'} (chisel; literally, "gouger"), {teywI'} (file; literally, "scraper"), and {ghItlhwI'} (stylus). (TKW 179): It does not matter whether this recording is visual, digital, scratches in stone, or marks on paper. (KGT 92): ... a fungus (known as {'atlhqam}) usually scraped off the bottom of certain animals' feet, though it also grows on trees. N.B. do not confuse with the homonym {tey} "be uncomfortable, be close". -- Voragh Ca'Non Master of the Klingons

Is this really a homonym? When the word was revealed, I got the impression it was more of an idiomatic meaning of {tey} rather than a separate word.

It's probably a reference to shaving. -- SuStel http://trimboli.name

When I think of {tey} in the "be uncomfortably close" sense, the metaphorical imagery I think of is something like a car in a car chase making it around a turn at high speed but losing some paint on a guardrail. Or, less excitingly, managing to get a sofa out of the living room but scraping up the wall on the way out. Success, but just barely. The metaphor "a close shave" for a narrow escape is based on similar imagery; avoiding some hazard by such a small margin that it takes off some of my hair.
(qep'a' 2017): … for the sense of being close or not having wiggle room or leeway (If you were victorious, but just barely made it at the last minute or something like that, you could say tey yay.) From this explanation I thought of “to scrape by”. --Voragh On 6/25/2018 10:48 AM, nIqolay Q wrote: On Mon, Jun 25, 2018 at 10:28 AM, Steven Boozer <sboozer@uchicago.edu<mailto:sboozer@uchicago.edu>> wrote: N.B. do not confuse with the homonym {tey} "be uncomfortable, be close". I suppose the answer would lie in whether or not one can say ??{yay tey} "a close victory". jang je SuStel, jatlh:

Perhaps, though I think more likely is the phrasal verb "scrape by". From Merriam-Webster: 1: to live with barely enough money; to be able to buy only the things most needed. Money was tight, but we somehow managed to scrape by. 2 : to succeed at doing something but just barely. He didn't study for the exam and just barely scraped by. QeS 'utlh
Here's the original quote: 3) For the sense of being close (or not close) or having (or not having)
wiggle room or leeway (e.g. a comfortable distance away [from something] or a comfortable victory), use *tey* (*"scrape"*) or *teybe'*. (*teybe' yay* *"the victory didn't scrape"* or *"the victory was comfortable."* If you were victorious, but just barely or made it at the last minute or something like that, you could say *tey yay*.)
https://www.kli.org/activities/qepmey/qepa-chamah-losdich/qepa-chamah-losdic... He translates this usage of *tey *as *"scrape"* twice, which suggests to me that this is intended as just an idiomatic usage of *tey* and not a new homonym. I'd say it's more than a suggestion; that's virtually explicit confirmation that it's a slang meaning of an existing verb. De'vID, just a heads-up, this entry in boQwI' should be changed to reflect this; it has this sense of tey listed separately as a "state or quality". QeS 'utlh
