Klingon tricorders were seen and used by Kruge's landing party in ST3. In ENTERPRISE "hand scanners" were used like tricorders. Starfleet and Vulcans each had their own model. I'm not sure it's *that* well-known. I think the pun is a little more blunt, like the others in TKD: {Hoq} + {ra'} = "trek" + "order" = "tricorder"
Now that sounds more like Okrand’s humor! Does anyone remember who suggested the Expedition Trike hypothesis (which I always thought a bit esoteric, though not impossible)?
