Yes, of course, that's what it literally means. But the more common English word is "player", that's why Okrand used it in his translation. It depends on the way of the translation. {'ovwI'} = "competitor" But if someone asked for how to translate "player" in game of cards, I would suggest {'ovwI'} - depending on the context of course.
