I want to say: "I see only a cat and the chancellor". There are two options: {vIghro' Qang je neH vIlegh} (vIghro neH Qang neH je vIlegh) Meaning-wise, perhaps the only difference is that the first means "I see only, a cat and the chancellor", while the second says "I see only a cat and only the chancellor". Other than that, which of the two would be "bettter" ? is this just a matter of personal preference ? ~ bara'qa'

I think the second is a bit contradictory, from a logical point of view. How can you see "only A" but also "only B"? What you can say is that you see "only (A+B)". Just my 2 cents. -- Lieven L. Litaer aka the "Klingon Teacher from Germany" http://www.klingonisch.de http://www.klingonwiki.net/En/

Yes, you're right. I noticed that too, while writing the initial message.
But other than that, does this matter come down to just personal preference ?
No, I think Lieven has it right. The second sentence not only makes no sense, it doesn't say what you want it to say. It's not a matter of preference. You want to say that you see a cat, the chancellor, and nothing else. You construct the noun phrase *vIghro' Qang je*/cat and chancellor,/ then you modify that to say that that's all you saw: *vIghro' Qang je neH*/only the cat and the chancellor./ -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
I could find only one example of either method, a NON-CANON line by Qov from DISCOVERY: QongtaHvIS HeghDI' SuvwI', 'oynot, Hom je neH yugh. Often, when a language lacks articles like “a” in “a cat”, speakers use the number one. {wa’ vIghro’ Qang je vIlegh.} charghwI’ vaghnerya’ngan rInpa’ bomnIS be’’a’ pI’.
