SoHvaD yuchwIj vIbonqangbe'
Suppose I see a Klingon enjoying some chocolate and ask, “jIHvaD yuchlIj Dabonqang'a'?” Assume that the Klingon wishes to keep all of the chocolate for him or herself (as suggested by the subject of this message). Would the most appropriate one-word response be “ghobe'” (because the question was asked with -'a'), “Qo'” (because it’s a question about volition), or is either fine?
I feel like, since it’s a yes/no question, that ghobe’ is the most appropriate. But perhaps a Klingon would respond Qo’ with the intended meaning being « I won’t (share my chocolate)! ».

Hmm. That made me think of a follow up question. Would “tlhIn” work for something like “your own”? yuchlIj tlhIn yISuq!

This goes from a /how do I say?/ question into a /what would a Klingon say?/ question, so here you must remember the advice about straightforwardness from /Power Klingon/ and /Klingon for the Galactic Traveler./ A Klingon would answer your question with a *HIja', HISlaH,* or *ghobe',* and you'd be no closer to obtaining chocolate. If your intention is to get chocolate, you should have said *jIHvaD yuchlIj yIbon* instead, in which the Klingon would answer you *lu', luq,* or *Qo'.* -- SuStel http://trimboli.name

Good point. I can see now that a Klingon would never respond to “Dabonqang'a'” with “Qo'”. I suppose “ghobe'” is still the more appropriate response to that question even for a Klingon-speaking non-Klingon as well.
I’m taking a class in the language and culture of American Sign Language. There’s an emphasis on the relationship between language and culture. Since others have answered the language part, I’ll append with a culture part. jIH? I’d just growl at you through bared teeth. If I said any word, it would be {ghobe’}, or maybe I’d use sign language and reveal a concealed weapon, suggesting that perhaps I’d share THAT with you, instead. If I were feeling talkative, I might say, {yInID neH. SuvchoHghach QaQ vItIv.} I wouldn’t use {Qo’} because it doesn’t really seem to be the reply to a question. It’s a clipped-Klingon refusal to follow a command, or perhaps could be a functional equivalent to “Don’t!”, depending on context. If you had said, {yuchlIj HIbon!}, I’d answer, {Qo’!} and reflexively prepare to harm you. charghwI’ ‘utlh
