Re: [tlhIngan Hol] qepHom 2023 new words
Here are the puns I've been able to crack so far from this year's qepHom: 'Ilyaw' (epitome, or the very best of something): Wile E. Coyote uses products from Acme. The word "acme" means something of the highest quality one can get. la'qab (whistling sound): Lauren Bacall famously taught Humphrey Bogart how to whistle. mu'vIb whistle (with shrill sound): "Word from the future" -- that'd be a word of (fore)warning. The explantion for *mu'vIb* did say it's the kind of whistle used for warnings. ruv nay' (dessert): This misunderstanding is obviously from the phrase "just deserts". Ha, ha, ha. reDlIgh (fluorine): *reDligh* backwards = guilder = florin = fluorine. majQa'! re'Hom'at (scarf (on neck)): Something to do with "achieve-maker-er" = neckerchief? rID'oH (barley): A rearrangement of the sounds in HORDE-, from Hordeum, the Latin name for barley. yuvwan (community [a not organized group of people with same interest]): Sounds like "you've won", but I', not sure of what the allusion is.

Scarf osteotomy is a surgical procedure used in treating foot deformity due to rheumatoid arthritis. -- ghunchu'wI'
The "scarf bunionectomy" is named after the carpentry "scarf joint". The {Hom} within the word can certainly evoke the idea of a bone being involved, but I'm not able to complete the word play with either of these suggestions. janSIy ________________________________ From: tlhIngan-Hol <tlhingan-hol-bounces@lists.kli.org> on behalf of Alan Anderson via tlhIngan-Hol <tlhingan-hol@lists.kli.org> Sent: Monday, November 20, 2023 8:51 PM To: tlhingan-hol@kli.org <tlhingan-hol@kli.org> Cc: Alan Anderson <qunchuy@alcaco.net> Subject: Re: [tlhIngan Hol] qepHom 2023 new words On Nov 20, 2023, at 6:20 PM, James Landau via tlhIngan-Hol <tlhingan-hol@lists.kli.org> wrote:

Don't think I've seen this one mentioned yet: *wIl **be short (length)*, a reference to Will Shortz, the New York Times' crossword puzzle editor and NPR puzzle master. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Shortz This would be his second reference in the language (*ngajrun* being the other.) I guess Maltz enjoys the crossword. Le mar. 21 nov. 2023, à 01 h 55, janSIy . via tlhIngan-Hol < tlhingan-hol@lists.kli.org> a écrit :

{re'Hom'at} sounds close enough to “rheumat-“ for me to make a connection immediately. — ghunchu'wI'
