I was recently inspired to complete a similar project on the Dirge for Kor from the end of the DS9 episode: Once More Unto the Breach, to see if I could make something more meaningful of it. If the one who made the translation which is published on the lyrics pages is on the list - no disrespect intended. Here's what I have so far (hope it lines-up for everyone): Phonetic My best guess What I hope it means me-ko ka-ra {mI' qul, qar'a'} The fires dance, right? eng-do ki-la {leng yo' qIj la'} The Commander of the Black Fleet travels key-do-sum {QI'tu'; Sum} Paradise; it is nearby ka-reH-do key-la {qarI'; yo' qIj la'} I call out to you; Commander of the black fleet sutem-pa raH-do {Sutempa', la' tlho'} Before you(all) deny, he thanks the Commander ma-ra eh- Kor {mara': 'el qor} We command: Kor enters re-ka {rI'qa'} (he/they) call(s) out again re-ka {rI'qa'} (he/they) call(s) out again re-ka {rI'qa'} (he/they) call(s) out again da-so pa-ca-re {DaSo'pa' qarI'} Before you cloak, I call out to you key ro-kah {yo' qIj qa'} Spirit of the Black Fleet [note: for this last line I could make nothing meaningful of the syllables in the order they came in (in conjunction with the following lines), so I swapped the first two. Maybe the original transcriber of the script swapped them first. If any of you can make more sense of them than me, I welcome your input.] ro-kah {yo' qa'} Spirit of the fleet ro-kah {yo' qa'} Spirit of the fleet ro-kah {yo' qa'} Spirit of the fleet If it helps, direct from the script we have this: Mi' qul qar'a, 'ej Do' QI'la'. QI'do' Sum, garI' do' QI'la. Sutem pa' rI' tlho' Mara' 'e' qor. rI'qa' rI'qa' rI'qa' DaSo' pa gareh QI' ro'qa' ro'qa' ro'qa' ro'qa. While we're discussing Kor, there's a meaningful quote from him in this episode, I hope my attempt at a translation does it justice: {yIn naH'e' yItIv, juppu'wI' Qup. baQDI' 'oH, 'ey, 'ach qaStaHvIS DISmey 'Iq yIyInQo'. qaSpu'DI' poH wIbchoH wejwa'.}

Kor is speaking to multiple friends, so use *peyInQo'.* /Fresh from the vine/ is tricky to translate! I don't blame you for simplifying it. Good on you for not trying to translate /sweet/ literally! *'ey* for /sweet taste/ and *tIv* for /savor/ are perfect choices. *Qapchugh chaH toDujchaj DavanmeH bItlhutlhlaH 'ej lujchugh chaH toDujchaj DavanmeH bItlhutlhlaH je* -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
