Software supporting Klingon for its GUI?
Hello together, I am a software developer with several open source projects. One of them support over 40 languages, even some exotic ones. So that is why I am interested in that topic. I wonder if there is "regular" software out there that support its GUI in Klingon. Are you aware of one? Of course there are some games (e.g. Minecraft) or language learning software. But I mean usual software like LibreOffice, Firefox, ... As Klingon language people do you check the settings of your installed software if it support Klingon? Best, Christian
I can't find a Software page on the Klingon wiki, so I'm bound to miss something. MacOS allows one to set the default language to Klingon. However, unless an app specifically supports Klingon, it will default to the next language in your list. I'm only aware of one program that supports Klingon. Google has been available in Klingon since before Gmail was a thing. I'm sure it is woefully out if date at this point. I was working on OOo years ago. But the server that hosted the project failed, and all of that data was lost. To my knowledge, no one has resumed the work. It's either OOo or LibreOffice that supports Klingon as a language for your document. Very helpful to not have squiggly red lines under every word. webOS had plans to allow Klingon to be a language on the phones and tablets until Palm went under. Several apps offered Klingon as a language. FireOS on the Fire Phone had pIqaD support. I always check new apps to see if Klingon is supported. I hope that was the information that you were looking for. ~Melanie Roney Sent from my Palm Prē On Wed, Aug 7, 2024, 10:44 Christian Buhtz via tlhIngan-Hol < tlhingan-hol@lists.kli.org> wrote:

I see the claim in articles that LibreOffice supports Klingon, but I sure as heck can't find a way to install it or indeed any evidence in LibreOffice that there is any Klingon at all. I couldn't find it in OpenOffice, either. On 8/7/2024 11:03 AM, Melanie Roney via tlhIngan-Hol wrote:

I did a screenshot, so my message was too big (even though it was a small screenshot). Choose Format: Character, and you can see a field for “Language”. Klingon is listed as a language there. No pIqaD font that I can find. I tried the spell checking feature, but I find it impenetrable. It says automatic spell checking is turned on, but writing {tlhIngan Hol} and “Klingon language” resulted in no misspellings, regardless of the language setting for either phrasing. Every time I try to run the spell checker, it resets the language to “none”. It didn’t modify {tlhIngan}, except to change the initial “t” to uppercase when starting a line. I belive the LO team reached out to us either here or on the Learn Klingon fb group for help. As it's open source, any of us could help them. ~Melanie Roney Sent from my Palm Prē On Wed, Aug 7, 2024, 14:14 Will Martin via tlhIngan-Hol < tlhingan-hol@lists.kli.org> wrote:

I got Klingon working in LO in the past with a language extension that fergusq over on the discord made in 2021. It was just a spellcheck/grammar check based on his own dictionary program and used the boQwI' database for words, it was not a gui localisation. There is an .oxt file available in the finnish section of his site at https://klingonia.fi still, but I can't seem to get it working now. I think over the years LibreOffice has changed but the extension hasn't, they might have even reverted the changes to add the Klingon language and locale information to the selectable languages. Great to hear that. I am still wonder if this would be worth the efforts and if there are users who would use my project in Klingon. But the translation platform used does support Klingon. So if anyone is interested you might take a look: <https://translate.codeberg.org/engage/backintime> It is a user-friendly backup software for GNU/Linux using rsync in the back. There are round about 380 strings and short sentences. But I assume that the technical topic itself makes it hard to translate into Klingon. Best regards, Christian

I take that as a good suggestion to add a link to such a page. What you are searching is here: https://klingon.wiki/En/Localisation Talking about the Wiki, it's interesting to know that the entire wiki can be set to Klingon; This counts for all Wikis made with foswiki, not just mine. -- Lieven L. And maybe someone want to add a GNU/Linux backup software named "Back In Time" [1] to that list. But before that the localization need to be done first [2]. [1] -- <https://github.com/bit-team/backintime> [2] -- <https://translate.codeberg.org/engage/backintime/>
