When I worked in Colonial Williamsburg I learned that in the 18th century, a screwdriver was a hammer. What we now call a screwdriver was then called a screw TURNER. (Qov < Okrand, 8/13/2012): The word for screw is {Hut'In vIl}, which is, of course, a ridgy {Hut'In}. Turns out {Hut'In} is the word for nail. Maltz also volunteered that the word for spike is {wIl}.
