[tlhIngan Hol] when to {-vaD} and when to {-Daq}

If we want to say "I gave the knife to the officer", we say {yaSvaD taj vInob}. Can someone please explain, why it would be wrong to say {yaSDaq taj vInob} ? ~ bara'qa'
