I daresay you know all the rules that are known by anyone. You always 
ask questions that end up with one of two answers: "we don't know" or 
"depends what you like." For you, now, I'd say it's a matter of becoming 
more comfortable with the rules you know and developing your style, 
rather than probing the gaps in our knowledge. When you can't answer a 
question of grammar, just reword your idea.

When translating, saying "it's hard to translate this way, so let me 
find another way" is not only allowed, it's vital, even when the 
languages are fully documented natural languages.
