Klingon word: qogh Part of speech: noun Definition: belt; ear (external, cartilaginous flap) _______________________________________________ 1) ear (external, cartilaginous flap) (n) (HQ 2.4): Actually, there are two words for ear: {qogh} refers to the flap of skin or cartilage or whatever it is that sticks out on either side of the head ... {qogh} "ear", of course is homophonous with {qogh}, "belt:. When used in context, there is seldom confusion; less so when the plural is used ({qoghDu'} can only be ears while {qoghmey} generally means belts). (KGT 88): {qogh} (ear - the external part, if there is one; the actual organ of hearing, the {teS}, is usually considered too small to bother with)" i.e. serving as food. (HQ 12.4:9): Ears (at least healthy ones) produce no byproducts other than earwax ({Serrum}), which is said to somehow just {vI'} accumulate in the ear. Klingon women wear ear rings: Dr Lenara Kahn gave a pair of large, grey metal Klingon ear rings to Jadzia Dax. She said they were a gift from a Klingon scientist (in lieu of a bat'leth, which she didn't fancy). (DS9 "Rejoined") SEE ALSO: cheS rabbit-like animal with long ears (n) Qoy hear (v) 'Ij listen (v) 2) belt (n) (KGT 58): A skin belt ({qogh}) both held pants ({yopwaH}) in place and provided a place from which to hang weapons or weapon holders. (KGT 56): The disruptor pistol, when not in use, may be carried in a holster, or {vaH}, worn on the side of the body and attached to the belt. (KGT 63): When not in use, knives are carried in sheathes worn on the side of the body, connected to the belt. The word for this sheath is {vaH}, the same as the word for holster but surely representing an older meaning of the term. (HQ 2.4): {qogh} "ear", of course is homophonous with qogh, belt. ... This homophony explains why the Klingon slang expression {qogh tuQmoHHa'}, literally "take off one's belt" is used to mean to not hear, for example, {qogh vItuQmoHHa'pu'} "I've taken off my belt; your secret is safe with me." qo'rIn DIr qogh leather belt (n) (qep'a' 2019) SEE ALSO: 'alnIl (belt) buckle (n) -- Voragh Ca'Non Master of the Klingons
