Klingon Word of the Day for Wednesday, December 25, 2019 Klingon word: tlho' Part of speech: verb Definition: thank _______________________________________________ qatlho' Thank you! (STE & TNK) qatlho'qu' Thank you very much. (TNK) chotlho' You thank me. (KLS) 'Iw HIq qagh je chojabpu'mo' qatlho' I thank you for the bloodwine and gagh (PB) le'yo' lutmey juja'pu'mo' qatlho' I thank you, for your stories of pride (PB) (CK): Remember, the Klingon culture is a very direct one and most of the time the social niceties of Terrans are considered just superfluous. Unlike other peoples, Klingons do not use everyday expressions such as please, excuse me, thank you, and the like. In dealing with Klingons, just state your business: no more, and no less. (Qov, [date?]): At qep'a' loSDIch Okrand was puzzled by a comment someone made and said something like, "There's a word for 'Thank you?'" Someone told him {qatlho'}, and he said something along the lines of, "I never intended it to mean 'thanks'" and elaborated a little on the circumstances it would be used in. (Qov, [date?]): When Marc Okrand signed my TKD I think I said {qatlho'neS}, which was probably a bit effusive, but hey, I was excited. He replied in English something close to, 'Well, there's NO Klingon response to that'." (Lieven, 11/14/2015): Besides of the verb {tlho'}, remember the scene in DSN where a Klingon is given a glass of bloodwine and answers with {maj}. That's also a typical Klingon way to say "thank you" like humans do. (DloraH, [date?]): I have heard some, including myself, simply say {maj} while going for a good warrior grasp on the arm for a Klingon "handshake". ARCHER: [in the Great Hall on Kronos] I'll take that as a thank you. SATO: I don't think they have a word for "thank you". (ENT "Broken Bow Pt. II") When Picard told Ambassador Kell *K'adlo* "Thank you," Kell gave him an odd look, then nodded (or grunted) and left the room without saying a word. (TNG "The Mind's Eye") SEE: tlho' appreciation, gratitude (n) -- Voragh Ca'Non Master of the Klingons
