Klingon Word of the Day for Thursday, April 06, 2023 Klingon word: Deq Part of speech: verb Definition: be erstwhile, former, prior, ex- Source: Marc Okrand at European qepHom 1/25/2014 _______________________________________________ (Lieven, 1/27/2014): There is also an idiomatic use of that verb, for example {Deq SuvwI'} is similar to the English expression "That warrior is history". (HQ 12.3:8-9): [{mIl} "be formerly honored"] would be applied to a leader who left office in disgrace, for example, or an ousted ship's captain. It would not be used of a {'utlh}, an officer who has stepped down or retired voluntarily and who is still respected. (KGT 50f): There is a second term for officer, but it is not frequently used. As is well known, it is considered the duty of officers on Klingon ships to assassinate their immediate superior if the higher-ranking officer has been judged unfit to serve, perhaps as a consequence of neglecting his or her duty, demonstrating cowardice, or behaving dishonorably. This practice extends even to the captain of the ship. As a result, there are not many officers who end their service to the Empire by simply stepping down or retiring. There are some, however, and the word {'utlh} is used to refer to an officer of this type. Perhaps "officer emeritus" is an appropriate translation. N.B. don't confuse with the noun {DeQ} "credit (monetary unit)". I discovered a weird coincidence here of which I'm not sure, and it might be just a concidence. {Deq} is "be erstwhile, former, prior, ex-" {'en} is "be not something, non-" Both words refer to something that is not or no longer what is used to be. Then we have {'enDeq} "bladder". Maybe someone's (urinary) bladder is not what it used to be? -- Lieven L.
