Klingon Word of the Day for Friday, April 16, 2021 Klingon word: vutpa' Part of speech: noun Definition: galley (kitchen on a ship) Source: TKD (113 KE, 134 EK) This Klingon Word of the Day is brought to you by qurgh (qurgh@kli.org).
Klingon word: vutpa' Part of speech: noun Definition: galley (kitchen on a ship) _______________________________________________ AFAIK never used in a sentence. The Bird of Prey Poster didn't mention or show the galley or mess hall, right? TREK TRIVIA: IIRC the only Klingon galley we've seen was that of the 22nd century IKS Somraw. Two skinned targs were seen hanging in the galley with a few live targ kept chained in a storage locker. T’Pol commented that Klingons like their food “freshly slaughtered”. (ENT "Sleeping Targs") This scene was fitting as the ENTERPRISE writers seemed to dwell on food and eating which were featured prominently in many episodes, as were the Enterprise's galley and mess hall. The IKS Pagh's mess hall was seen in some detail in TNG "A Matter of Honor" and that of the IKS Rotarran in DS9 "Soldiers of the Empire". CULTURAL NOTES: (KGT 100f.): Any visitor to a Klingon city, or even outpost, will undoubtedly want to spend some time sampling Klingon food in a restaurant ({Qe'}) … The person who takes the order and brings the food is the {jabwI'} ("server") and the chef is the {vutwI'} ("cook"; in a large restaurant, the head chef is referred to as the {vutwI' quv}, the "honored cook"). (st.klingon 6/1997): {SopmeH pa'} "dining room, eating room" ... is a reasonable way to say eating room or dining room. I also don't think Klingons, not being prone to stand on ceremony where eating is concerned, would object to eating breakfast in something called a {'uQ pa'} "dinner room", a common-type noun-noun construction. (KGT 42): A leg served as food at a banquet in an upper-class household, however, is likely to be called a {HajDob}, an old word for limb. In another context, such as a meal with warriors in a ship's {SopwI'pa'} (mess hall), only the term {gham} will be heard. -- Voragh, Ca'Non Master of the Klingons Please contribute relevant vocabulary from the last year or two. No, it does not. It only has the {Soj polmeH pa'}, which is surprisingly close to the bridge. -- Lieven L. Litaer aka the "Klingon Teacher from Germany" http://www.tlhInganHol.com http://klingon.wiki/Word/Vutpa-
