A fellow Klingon Assault Group member, Jaymz Smith of the IKV Swifthawk, shared to our member forum this email he received from Dr. Okrand: ------------------------------------------- Jaymz — Sorry to have been sluggish in getting back to you. I ended up doing a lot of traveling last year (after my visit to Vulcan) — several US cities and a couple trips to Europe (most of the traveling was related to Klingon somehow). Things didn't calm down until after the holidays. So… For "Swifthawk," I'd go with 'apuStoQ. This is a new word (mostly). The toQ part means a particular kind of Klingon bird of prey (a bird, not a space vessel — the Klingon Bird of Prey ship is toQDuj). The 'apuStoQ is a bird of prey, a hawk-like bird, that flies particularly fast. A Klingon way to say "dungeon" is wutlh pa'. This is literally "underground room." There's no word for "cuddle," but yachchuq gets us kind of close. The verb yach means "pet" or "stroke" (like petting a dog), and yachchuq means "pet each other" or something like that. yachchuqmeH means "for the purpose of petting each other." So yachchuqmeH wutlh pa' is "underground room for petting one another" — that is, "cuddling dungeon." If I've misunderstood what you mean by "cuddling dungeon," let me know. In the meantime, I hope everything is going well for you, and all the best for the New Year. - Marc Thank you again Marc Okrand ------------------------ qurgh
Always nice to have more animals; makes for good similes :) This comment also serves as quite explicit confirmation that the word «toQ» refers to a *type* of bird-of-prey, not just any bird of prey. Of course, we still don't know how broad this type is; it could be a species, a genus, a family or even a polyphyletic group defined by shared characteristics, rather than heredity. //loghaD ________________________________ From: tlhIngan-Hol <tlhingan-hol-bounces@lists.kli.org> on behalf of qurgh lungqIj <qurgh@wizage.net> Sent: Wednesday, January 10, 2018 12:25:57 AM To: tlhIngan-Hol@kli.org Subject: [tlhIngan Hol] "Swifthawk" and "Cuddle Dungeon" A fellow Klingon Assault Group member, Jaymz Smith of the IKV Swifthawk, shared to our member forum this email he received from Dr. Okrand: ------------------------------------------- Jaymz - Sorry to have been sluggish in getting back to you. I also requested "cuddle dungeon", so I'm glad he got to it. However, I'm sad to see that it's simply an underground room. Wikipedia: A *dungeon* is a room or cell <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_cell> in which prisoners <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner> are held, especially underground. Huh, didn't realize dungeons were so simple. We attach so much more baggage to the word. Okay, in that case, wouldn't *{wutlh bIghHa'} work better? I mean, my basement is an underground room, but I wouldn't call it a dungeon. Now, "cuddle dungeon" is using "dungeon" in the BDSM sense. Which has nothing to do with being physically underground nor is it a place to keep prisoners. But if the BDSM scene on Kronos has adopted the term {yachchuqmeH wutlh pa'}, I won't argue with them. Perhaps the cuddle dungeon crowd really does meet exclusively in basements. {yach} also used in {jIb yachwI'} "hairbrush" Meaning that {yach} also means "brush" v. ? So is this also a room for brushing each other('s hair)? ~naHQun

{yach} is also to "strum" a stringed instrument.... I wonder which part they strum on each other! qurgh

For "Swifthawk," I'd go with 'apuStoQ. Too bad we can't quite yet infer much about the {'apuS} part. Do I recall correctly that before, Marc said specifically that there isn't a verb for "fast" hence the need to say things like {nom lenglaH Duj}?

Great! A new word, and I don't have to change my most recent draft of "Far over the misty mountains cold" lyrics again. (Thanks to SuStel for the suggestion of {wutlh pa'} last August.) {vI'laSHom HuDmey bIr Hay HopDaq, wutlh pa' jaQ DIS qan je qoDDaq, majaHnISmo' qaSpa' jajlo', qol'ommaj ngo' wISamnISmo'. puHmey jenqu'Daq jach Sormey; qaStaHvIS ram, bey tlhuD SuSmey; Doqqu'choH qul, tInqu'choH qul; meQbogh Sechmey wov rur Sormey.} But it seems to work only for a room that is actually underground. I think some context is missing as there is an extended meaning, and similar rooms might be installed anywhere, even on a ship. Do we have a word for "brig"? Luckily Marc said that was *a* way to say dungeon, which implies there can be others. As for the extended meaning, as your typical torture chamber is associated with the typical dungeon, I think we can cobble something together with the word {joy'}, maybe a {joy'meH pa'}. Further we could work in the word {ngaH} perhaps. (Do we want to say "death by snu-snu" in Klingon?) I did find an interesting word while looking up torture: {be'joy'}, but that's only half the story. mupwI'
