Klingon Word of the Day for Tuesday, November 08, 2016
Klingon word: raHta' Part of speech: noun Definition: racht (Klingon food)
'ugh ro'qegh'Iwchab, nIb raHta' the *racht* is as heavy as the *rokeg* blood pie (HQ 13.1:8) A type of food worm served live: "There's nothing worse than half-dead *racht*." (DS9 "Melora") Klingon food item shunned when half dead (KCD). "Food made from live serpent worms (not to be confused with *gagh*)." (DI) I.e. a larger variety of serpent worm. (FTG) (KGT 94): If a dish with a standard preparation technique (a {nay' motlh}, "usual dish") is being offered, asking how it is to be prepared is a demonstration of cultural ignorance. Thus, in addition to [{pIpyuS pach}] *pipius* claw, questions about {bIreQtagh} (*bregit* lung), (targh tIq) (heart of *targ*), {raHta'} (*racht*), {tlhImqaH} (*zilm'kach*), and {Qaj tlhuQ} (*kradge* tail) should be avoided. {gha'poq} (*grapok* sauce) is a "condiment, often used to bring out the flavor in *gagh* or *racht*. (DI) See http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Racht for more info. -- Voragh tlhIngan ghantoH pIn'a' Ca'Non Master of the Klingons

This is a nice example of quality comparison: Q N1, *nIb* N2 /N1 is as Q as N2./ -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
It's also a nice alternative to those variant comparison formulae we saw in HolQeD 13.1 (p.9-10) : ro'qegh'Iwchab 'ey law' qagh 'ey law' the rokeg blood pie is as delicious as the gagh tlhIngan HoS law' 'Iw HoS law' the Klingon is as strong as blood tlhIngan woch law' tera'ngan woch nIb the Klingon is as tall as the Terran SuvwI' ghung law' qagh ghung rap the warrior is as hungry as gagh -- Voragh From: tlhIngan-Hol [mailto:tlhingan-hol-bounces@lists.kli.org] On Behalf Of SuStel On 11/8/2016 10:31 AM, Steven Boozer wrote: 'ugh ro'qegh'Iwchab, nIb raHta' the *racht* is as heavy as the *rokeg* blood pie (HQ 13.1:8) This is a nice example of quality comparison: Q N1, nIb N2 N1 is as Q as N2. -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
HolQeD 13.1 (p.9-10) :
ro'qegh'Iwchab 'ey law' qagh 'ey law' the rokeg blood pie is as delicious as the gagh tlhIngan HoS law' 'Iw HoS law' the Klingon is as strong as blood
I can understand these examples since they employ on both "slots" the {law'} HolQeD 13.1 (p.9-10):
tlhIngan woch law' tera'ngan woch nIb the Klingon is as tall as the Terran SuvwI' ghung law' qagh ghung rap the warrior is as hungry as gagh
I can't understand why on these examples, at the second "slot" we don't have the {law'}, but we have {nIb}, and {rap} respectively. Is this just another alternate way of expressing the desired meaning, or is there an actual reason because of which we don't have the {law'} on the second "slot" ? qunnoH jan puqloD On Tue, Nov 8, 2016 at 5:52 PM, Steven Boozer <sboozer@uchicago.edu> wrote:
