Klingon in Picard [spoiler-warning]
This might contain spoilers. As the third season has been aired now, I think it's okay to write about it. I just started watching and have only seen the first episode so far. During that first episode, when Rafi arrives on a bar on M'talas Prime (obviously named after showrunner Terry Matalas - duh), one can see some Klingon letters very shortly and in low quality. Nevertheless, they are clear to read. The first line has the letters {(e)y tISoQ}, the second ends with {mat}, perhabs preceded by an apostrophe, which would make sense being the word {'o'mat}. Does anyone have any information about who made this, or what it is supposed to mean? I would believe that the first word is a translation of "close the..." and it's clear that the suffix {-moH} is missing there, so it's possible that a non-expert made this using the dictionary and misused the word {SoQ}; Or they wanted to say "be closed" but then the prefix is wrong. Unfortunately, the end credits do not mention any names I know of, nor any Klingon language supervisor. -- Lieven L. What is the time stamp? I watched the scene from 17:18 to 21:40 and didn't see the text you mention. I did see a sign in multiple languages, obscured by drinks, on the countertop of the restaurant? kiosk? where Rafi talks to an Orion dealer, which has a few Klingon characters on it on the second line. The only ones visible are what the KLI mapping calls a, gh, ng. The a is probably the first character, but there's probably more after the ng, obscured. The top line is unclear. Visible at 18:15. Then, at 18:36, the other half of the sign is mostly visible. The top line now appears to be Latin characters in a difficult to read, blocky typeface, and I can make out "(obscured)LIA'(?)ACH." I think. The same ng in the second line and then the drink are visible, followed by what appear to be Asian characters. Rafi spends the rest of the episode in her ship. -- SuStel http://trimboli.name

The time stamp is correct, exactly at the beginning after the subtitle "district six" disappears. Look on the big round pillar on the left of her head. I will add screenshots to the Wiki when I get the time. It's very difficult to see, you might need to adjust the brightness of your screen.

Yes, I also saaw that one, but it's not the KLI font, looks more like the old meaningless letters. -- Lieven L. Litaer aka the "Klingon Teacher from Germany" http://www.tlhInganHol.com http://klingon.wiki/En/StarTrekPicard
You said the scene took place in a bar, so could this be an attempt at {XXX(m)ey tISop!} "Eat the [somethings [plural]]!" with another sign advertising *o'mat* for sale? I 'm ashamed to admit I don't know pIqaD, but Is it possible that the writer or artist confused or mis-copied the letters /p/ and /Q/? FYI for those who have forgotten that immortal line from "Heart of Glory" *O'Mat Gri T'M pffiots*, Okrand provided us with the "official" spellings at qep'a' 2019: (qep’a’ 2019): In the TNG episode "Heart of Glory", the Klingon ordering food and drink (from the food replicator) says he wants {'o'mat ghIrI'}, which is some sort of meat and pasta-like concoction. Then he specifies that the fat in the food should be boiled, one of the optional ways to prepare this dish. He says {tI'Im!} "boil (the fat [in the entrees])!" He uses the prefix {tI-} because there are three separate entrees. Finally, he orders a special, rather pungent Klingon beverage known as {pIvyoch}. Hmm... I wonder if the bar served {pIvyoch} as well? Voragh ------------------------------Original Message------------------------------ From: Lieven L.
