*Hermes:* God of boundaries, travel, trade, communication, language, writing, cunning and thieves. Hermes was also responsible for protecting livestock and presided over the spheres associated with fertility, music, luck, and deception. The son of Zeus and Maia, Hermes is the messenger of the gods, and a psychopomp who leads the souls of the dead into the afterlife. He was depicted either as a handsome and athletic beardless youth, or as an older bearded man. His attributes include the herald's wand or caduceus, winged sandals, and a traveler's cap. His sacred animals include the tortoise. *hermes:* veHmey, leng, Hol, ‘ongmeH laH, nIHwI’pu’ je Qun; mechlu’taHvIS, Qumlu’taHvIS, ghItlh luqonlu’taHvIS, Hoch wanI’meyvam che’ *hermes*. That will depend upon font substitution in the receiver’s Email. Some fonts have italics designed by the font designer so that the italic version of a given font has a specific shape intended by the designer of the original font. Other fonts have no built-in italic, at which point the operating system puts the font’s shape through an algorithm that slants the font. Depending on the font size, this may also make the font appear to be bold. Font snobs take issue with whether or not an italic font is a “true” italic, which is not really just a slanted version of the font, but has additional attributes not part of any algorithm, since it requires human artistic aesthetics to decide the details of the font shape. Similarly, font designers can design a bold version of the font, or leave that blank and the OS will apply an algorithm to the font to make the font fatter, which is not really quite identical to the font made bold by the font designer. And, of course, the bold italic version of the font can be specified by the font designer, or algorithms step in to do whatever the designer didn’t do. SuStel’s email client and OS and the default font made the italic appear to be bold as well. Mine did not. charghwI’ ‘utlh (ghaH, ghaH, -Daj)

The italic appeared to be italic (it was buried in one of the paragraphs), and the bold appeared to be bold. There were no bold italics. Qa'yIn sent his message in multipart/alternative, with the alternatives being text/plain (with the asterisks and slashes added) and text/html (with the text effects in html). His client sent the parts in that order, and in multipart/alternative, the parts are sent in order of increasing preference. This means that your mail client will display the last one that you allow according to your settings. My email client is Thunderbird, as anyone can tell by looking at the message source of anything I send. By default, Thunderbird will prefer text/html over text/plain, though there's no way anyone can tell whether I've changed the settings. So I DO have Thunderbird set to default settings in this matter (and you should have guessed that based on how I send most messages in text/html, but not this one because I won't add any text effects), and it automatically shows me messages in "original HTML." I can override this by going to View > Message Body As > Plain Text, and now I'm seeing what you're seeing: asterisks and slashes. The thing is, virtually every mail client on the planet is capable of displaying HTML messages now and has been for decades, and the only reason anyone's doesn't is because they don't want it to. And there's really not much difference between seeing *Qapla'* and typing {Qapla'}, while anyone who wants to can see it in bold face. -- SuStel http://trimboli.name

Ah, well, I must have done something to change that. The auto-detection decided it needed to be HTML. Oh well. -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
