Klingon word: batleH bey' Part of speech: noun Definition: Bat'telh display Source: _______________________________________________ AFAIK not used in a sentence. Note spelling: there's no "a" in {betleH}. SEE: bey' ceremonial display (n) (KGT < KCD) betleH bey' bat'leth Display (KCD) nuH bey' Pride of Weapons (KCD) quv bey' Honor Display (KCD) TREK NOTES: "Where are all your weapons? Don't you display your weapons?" (Trelane to Kirk, TOS "The Squire of Gothos") Mirror Kirk certainly does. He had a display of exotic knives on the wall over his desk in his quarters on the ISS Enterprise. For that matter, everyone carries a knife on the Mirror Enterprise. (TOS "Mirror, Mirror") And so does Worf. A photo of what might be Worf's {nuH bey'} on the wall of his quarters on the Enterprise-D can be seen in TKW p.124 (cf. TNG "Genesis", et al.). -- Voragh Ca'Non Master of the Klingons
I stand corrected. There is one example: qaStaHvIS wa'maH puq poHmey, wo'rIv batleH ghaj qorDu'Daj Worf's bat'telh has been in his family for ten generations. [SkyBox S8] This spelling {batleH] may be a typo by the people at SkyBox. The sword itself was first seen in TNG "Reunion" (TNG). (De'vID, 11/3/2015): {batlh} and {'etlh} were already in TKD to begin with. When Ronald D. Moore co-wrote the TNG episode "Reunion", he wanted to call Kahless' blade "the Sword of Honor", which he translated using TKD as {batlh 'etlh} (or {batlh'etlh}, which was garbled into *bat'telh* in the printed script). The actors mispronounced the word consistently as /bat-leth/, which Marc Okrand then retroactively canonised as {betleH}. Source: the commentary track on the TNG Season 4 [DVD] set. Which also explains the origin of the bizarre "Federation Standard" spelling *bat'telh*.
