At qepHom 2023, we learned some words for whistles. Okrand just gave me some additions on their usage. Most of it basically was clear, but it's good to have a definite response: - These ship- or factory-type whistles cannot be "played" by a person. They're powered by some sort of energy (steam, electricity, whatever). - You can use {SuS} if you're playing a {mu'vIb}, and {'uq} is if there's no instrument/implement involved (except maybe your fingers). - The verb to activate a wall-mounted device is {chu'} (not {SuS}). This is added to the Klingon Language wiki: https://klingon.wiki/En/Whistle The full message, include my questions, can be found here: https://qephom.de/e/message_from_maltz_231215_whistles.html -- Lieven L. Thanks for sharing the details and for creating the wiki page (which everyone should read). Just for the sake of obsessive completeness, here's a note from qep'a' 2018: (qep'a' 2018): ... if there’s an object, it’s the thing (song? birdcall?) being whistled ... and some vocabulary: SuS blow (into wind instrument) to produce sound (v) chu' play (a musical instrument) (v) QoQ jan musical instrument (n) ngujlep mouthpiece (of a wind instrument) (n) qung hole in a musical instrument (n) Hmm... can Klingon whistles have mouthpieces and fingering holes? -- Voragh ------------------------------Original Message------------------------------ From: Lieven L. You're right indeed that {chu'} can mean both "play an instrument" and "activate a device". So it can probably be used to play any whistle, no matter how it's activated. The questions I quote blow were more focussing on the verb {SuS} which is used to play a wind instrument. Since {SuS} means "blow into" in this context, it surely cannot be used for a tachnically activated "whistle/horn". Since {chu'} has two meanings, I think your question is redundant, as the double meaning covers both answers. But maybe I misunderstand. Lieven. In the KLI list of new words here, it says for {'uq} "whistle [if there's an object, it's the thing (song? birdcall?) being whistled]". https://www.kli.org/about-klingon/new-klingon-words/u/ Who added the "(song? birdcall?)" part? Do we have any info on what the possible objects of {'uq} are besides {la'qab}? -- De'vID

I checked and it was in the original new words document supplied by Okrand that year, so he added that part. qurgh
