Klingon Word of the Day for Monday, July 18, 2016
Klingon word: baqghol Part of speech: noun Definition: type of liquor, *bahgol* Source: KGT (211 KE, 235 EK, 248 EK)
Never used in a sentence. (KGT 95): many native Klingon alcoholic drinks have names that do not contain the word {HIq}. Among these are... {baqghol) ("bahgol"), consumed heated and out of rather small glasses (KGT 98): Since certain drinks are typically associated with certain containers, saying the type of drink plus {HIvje'} indicates the type of cup or glass as well... {baqghol HIvje'} ("bahgol cup"). STC Library Computer ("Klingon Miscellany"): A Klingon beverage (pronounced 'BACK-goal'). Long-time Trill friend Curzon Dax and the Klingon Kang first shared this drink at the Korvat colony, prior to the Klingon-United Federation of Planets détente - presumably before the Khitomer Accords began in AD 2293. Much later, Deep Space Nine's Science Officer, Jadzia Dax, offered it to her three Klingon comrades (Kang, Koloth and Kor) before their 'blood oath' mission. It is served warm in small saki-like glasses by custom. One loose translation may be 'opponent's fire.' (Reference: {DS9] Blood Oath) -- Voragh tlhIngan ghantoH pIn'a' Ca'Non Master of the Klingons

That would be *weapons* fire, not flame: {baH ghol} "the opponent fires".

Thanks a lot for this. Seems obvious like that is the correct answer for that source. I will add it to the abbreviations list. Is there a common abbreviation for the communicator magazine? -- Lieven L. If my notes are correct, the {baqghol} reference came from Star Trek Communicator #104 (Aug-Sep 1995) special Klingon issue. -- Voragh From: tlhIngan-Hol [mailto:tlhingan-hol-bounces@lists.kli.org] On Behalf Of qurgh lungqIj Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2016 3:18 AM According to this post (https://www.kli.org/tlhIngan-Hol/1999/November/msg00741.html) in the Mailing list archive it stands for the official Paramount "Star Trek: Continuum". qurgh On Tue, Jul 19, 2016 at 4:12 AM, Lieven <levinius@gmx.de<mailto:levinius@gmx.de>> wrote: On 18 Jul 2016 16:13, "Steven Boozer" <sboozer@uchicago.edu<mailto:sboozer@uchicago.edu> <mailto:sboozer@uchicago.edu<mailto:sboozer@uchicago.edu>>> wrote: STC Library Computer ("Klingon Miscellany"): [...] Am 19.07.2016 um 09:48 schrieb De'vID: nuq 'oH STC? I'm glad you mention this, since I did not find the notes in the archive of the "STC Library Computer". That one only shows the word, with no further explanation. -- Lieven L. Litaer aka Quvar valer 'utlh Grammarian of the KLI http://www.facebook.com/Klingonteacher http://www.klingonwiki.net
