(KGT) (KGT 53): There are a number of words employed to describe the specific functions performed by officers on a ship, but none of these is used as a title. For example, the science officer is the {QeDpIn}, the communications officer is the {QumpIn}, the weapons officer is the {nuHpIn}, the engineering officer is the {jonpIn}, the tactical officer is the {ya}, and the helmsman is the {DeghwI'}. It is not correct, however, to say {qImlaq ya} (Tactical Officer K'mlak). On the other hand, one might say, {ya ghaH qImlaq Sogh'e'} (Lieutenant K'mlak is the tactical officer). Noted. But it still makes a good mnemonic. Any idea of the origin of {ya}? It’s an unusual noun ending in a vowel and Okrand chose not to use {to'} “tactics” to form *{to’pIn}. … and for those keeping track of Klingon Trek trivia (since I forgot to post it before): The IKC Pagh had an (unnamed) tactics officer on the bridge. (TNG "A Matter of Honor") Worf served briefly as tactical officer aboard the IKC Hegh'ta during the Klingon Civil War of 2367-68. There were a lot more words that ended in vowels in the original dictionary than we get today. I would guess it's just a random syllable Okrand chose. Why not *to'pIn?* Why not *DeghpIn?* I think Okrand was intentionally /not/ being systematic. It helps make the language more closely resemble a natural language. -- SuStel http://trimboli.name
