whales dolphins {-pu'} and {-mey}
There's no answer to this, but I'll write it anyway. We say that {-pu'} is to be used with beings capable of language. maj.. But how do we define language ? Words and syllables ? And you now something ? To ghe''or with parrots. They just repeat what they hear. But don't whales and dolphins communicate, or do they make sounds because they just get their kicks that way ? Or because we don't understand their language, we should use {-mey} ? Or should we use {-mey} because they're "animals" ? Because I know many people, myself included, who are waaay less intelligent than a dolphin.. So, I can't understand why I shouldn't say {*dolphin*pu'} instead of {*dolphin*mey}. And because I got so worked up by this obvious injustice to these animals, from now on, it will be *whale*pu' and *dolphin*pu' for me. ~ hkhjhjhj
You picked two very interesting species there. Generally speaking, animals don't take {-pu'}. But we have seen on screen evidence that whales are capable of communicating with extraterrestrial species. And dolphins serve as crew on the Enterprise-D. That said, just because my cats are able to communicate various things to me, doesn't mean that the qualify for {-pu'}. So I'd leave whales at {-mey}, but I'd use {-pu'} for the dolphins in Cetacean Ops if for no other reason than to show respect as they are a part of the crew. But I'd leave everyday dolphins at {-mey} unless I was talking about them in a specific instance where they were trying to thank me for all the fish. ~naHQun

Yes indeed. As far as these two species are concerned there are many evidence (as I've seen in documentaries), that their abilities to communicate are far more complex than other species. Because as you correctly noticed, even cats could "communicate" something to a human. But as far as whales/dolphins are concerned, it's not just something "superficial". So, I think (just my personal take on this), that they deserve the {-pu'}. ~ cxcxcc
