Klingon Word of the Day for Thursday, May 04, 2017 Klingon word: cheS Part of speech: noun Definition: rabbit-like animal with long ears Source: qep'a' 23 This Klingon Word of the Day is brought to you by qurgh (qurgh@kli.org).
[For "bunny"... There's a Klingon animal that's sort of like a rabbit called a {cheS}. So a rabbit on Earth would be, I guess, a {tera' cheS}, though, in context, {cheS} is good enough. And a "bunny," I supposed is a {cheSHom} or maybe {cheSoy}.] e-mail MO to naHQun July 4, 2016 On Thu, May 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM, <qurgh@wizage.net> wrote:

When the words from qep’a’ 23 were shared back in July, qurgh added a comment: Dr. Okrand noted that what prompted Maltz to come up with this word in this context was not clear. Clearly a not-so-subtle hint for us to discover the pun. I assumed it was a name; but type “rabbit ches” into your browser’s Search window and see for yourselves … --Voragh On Behalf Of Michael Roney, Jr. [For "bunny"... Oh, I assumed it was meant to imply that {cheSmey} were associated with rapid reproduction for Klingons, in the same way that rabbits are on Earth. Perhaps we're interpreting different parts of the context in different ways. - SapIr On Thu, May 04, 2017 at 05:36:25PM +0000, Steven Boozer wrote:

Our browsers must have different settings, but I found lots of cute images and videos of rabbits playing chess! See especially "Bunny Chess.MOV" on YouTube. (Was this a popular video that people forwarded to each other? I don't have an iPhone so I'm completely oblivious to this stuff!) --Voragh

I found those too — but wasn't the word listed in the same section as (or soon after) the as-close-as-we've-ever-gotten-to-genitalia words in the qep'a' booklet? I assumed that that was the context that was being referred to. I don't remember there being a rabbit chess meme — more likely than not, this is probably just an instance of the "every sort of cute picture involving cute animals has probably been taken enough times to get plenty of Google hits" phenomenon. But you might want to ask someone with a pet rabbit. - SapIr On Fri, May 05, 2017 at 01:17:20PM +0000, Steven Boozer wrote:

You may well be right. Still... gurgh's mysterious comment:
Dr. Okrand noted that what prompted Maltz to come up with this word in this context was not clear.
... does make one think! Okrand always knows the puns behind his words, though he may not want to reveal them!

I certainly get great use out of {cheSoy}. I sometimes call my daughter {cheSoy mach}, since my pet name for her has always been "little bunny." Then she tells me to stop speaking Klingon, although she has me listed as {vavoy} in her phone.

Correct. If I'm not mistaken, most of the new words revealed at that qep'a' were from the wish list poll that qurgh put together. Okrand/Maltz were sent groups of words/subjects we wanted to discuss. So everything we got all fit into neat categories, because that's how we requested them. Separate from that, my children requested words for "owl" and "bunny". My son was told the word {cheS} before anyone else. Marc then chose to reveal the word to everyone else during the qep'a' along with the other new words. So there is a chance that the pun has nothing to do with the rest of the words on the "Body Functions and Parts" page. There is also a chance that {cheS} breed like rabbits. jatlh voragh:

--Voragh When I google "rabbit cheS", I get hits for Alice in Wonderland inspired makeup due to "Cheshire Cat" and "White Rabbit". This would not be the first Alice in Wonderland related pun. -- ~Michael Roney, Jr. Freelance Translator
