A knot is equivalent to a nautical mile per hour, but it's still a single base unit for speed. 
All speeds can be given in distance per time, of course, but the name for the unit doesn't have to be derived from other terms.

Like nautical miles per hour for example?

Though I reckon since Marc did the Air and Space Museum app translation, we
will have to get used to expressing speeds that way.
