The Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to pass the speed of sound DURING SUSTAINED, LEVEL FLIGHT.

Several hot-shot fighter pilots briefly exceeded Mach 1 during powered dives in aircraft not designed for supersonic flight.

Some of them even lived to tell the tale.
