I have always thought that "grid" (in English) refers to the
lines, not the space between. And since Maltz confirmed that the
word can also be used for the lines on a map, I thinks it's clear

The lines on a map also have spaces between them. Also, not every
grid has lines.

A third option: tlhat grid refers to the lines and
the spaces between them, taken together as a system.
