PUN: backwards it's *qupros*, allegedly ancient Greek for copper; *ku-pi-ri-jo* is Mycenaean Greek word for "Cypriot".  The island of Cyprus was so renowned for its copper that the Latin word for the metal, *cuprum*, is derived from the name of the island, specifically from the phrase *aes Cyprium* ("metal of Cyprus").
