(MO > Lieven, 12/18/2019): In English, wail is the correct term for people crying or sobbing loudly with grief at a funeral. The verb whine is used for a usually high-pitched crying kind of sound when you're complaining about something or unhappy about something. The kids whined when their father wouldn't let them eat cake. If the kids whined at a funeral, it would be because they didn't want to be there, not because they were sad (and any whining would be disrespectful - wailing at a funeral is not uncommon).
(S31): "When a Klingon warrior dies or is killed, other Klingons may perform a ceremonial howl or yell as part of the Klingon death ritual. The eyes of the fallen Klingon are opened and others roar in a great crescendo. This yell is victorious in nature, rather than mournful and also serves to warn the other dead that a Klingon warrior is coming."

TREK NOTES:
"When I was a boy, my father used to take my brother and me on camping trips in the Ural mountains. Every night we would listen to the wolves howling in the distance. Nikolai was afraid of them, but I would lay in my tent for hours just listening. I remember being seized by the urge to just strip off my clothes and run into the night to live in the forest and become something wild." (Worf, DS9 "Change of Heart"]
Worf gave the death howl when Jadzia died after being attacked by the *pah*-wraith possessing Dukat. (DS9 "Tears of the Prophets")
After killing Chancellor Gowron in a duel Worf knelt, opened the dead man's eyes and gave the death howl. (DS9 "Tacking Into the Wind")
